Forbes "slams" Madonna again
Madonna MDNA: 180K Concert Ticket Buyers Didn't Want CD They'd Bought Anyway

Quote:
Here’s an alarming statistic on Madonna‘s “MDNA” album. Live Nation sources say they’ve sold 600,000 concert tickets to Madonna’s shows in the US. The tour commences this summer with a big two day stint at Yankee Stadium. But “MDNA” has only sold 420,000 copies, according to estimates, in its three weeks. Every concert ticket sold online came with an album–either a download link or a mail in coupon for a physical CD. That means not every purchaser of a ticket online activated the code or took advantage of obtaining the CD. In other words, 180,000 people who bought tickets, didn’t want the new music from Madonna at all. “They come to a Madonna show to hear her do the old hits like Material Girl or Like a Virgin,” said a source. This isn’t particular to Madge. Live Nation sold millions of tickets to U2‘s last tour, but the album attached to it–”No Line on the Horizon” — was a horribly stiff. (The album, to be truthful, wasn’t that good anyway.) More and more, the “record business” has become one about live performance. Recorded music–maybe because it’s become commercialized and cold in a digital age–simply isn’t drawing customers. In the case of “MDNA,” it’s kind of astounding that the Madonna fans weren’t even curious about new music. Meanwhile, Live Nation says it has $1.4 million advance in the US for the domestic tour and another $1 million from around the world. “I’ll take a $2.4 million advance anyday on any tour,” a Live Nation insider said glibly. PS Madonna should think about this when picking songs for her tour: on amazon, 10 of her top 20 downloaded songs are classic hits from the past.
