Reviews:
AllMusic (3 out of 4 stars)
Janet is 40 years old, but she has said that she feels half her age, and her breakthrough as a pop phenomenon occurred in 1986 -- hence the title of her ninth album. 20 Y.O. is her safest and tamest work since 1984's Dream Street, not only because she couldn't have possibly taken her sexed-up confessional routine beyond the tidbits and techniques divulged throughout 2004's Damita Jo. With only a few exceptions, 20 Y.O. provides further refinements of the fun, flirtatious, midtempo songs of her past several albums. This is not a problem. Even when there are clear instances where Janet, along with principal collaborators Jermaine Dupri, Johnta Austin, Jimmy Jam, and Terry Lewis, are taking an extended ride on the electro-nostalgia bandwagon -- "So Excited" samples Herbie Hancock's "Rockit," patches of "Get It Out Me" resemble Afrika Bambaataa's "Looking for the Perfect Beat," "Show Me" might not have happened without the existence of Ciara's "Goodies" -- they are too fresh and infectious to be considered knock-offs. There are crafty analogues and references to various points in Jackson's past: "This Body"'s rock edge recalls "Black Cat" (though it's more of a strutter than a headbanger), "Daybreak" sparkles and glides like "Runaway" and "Escapade," and "Take Care" is a classic Janet ballad in the vein of "Come Back to Me." The parallels are natural enough that they don't seem all that premeditated. Almost as significantly, the album is roughly 20 minutes shorter than usual, with only a handful of interludes, so there's little meandering, in turn making it easier to become familiar with the curves. What really differentiates the album from its predecessors is that there's almost no trace of tension to be heard. It's all about fooling around and being in love. Janet's gang of assistants is on top of its game, and Janet herself has remembered that she doesn't have to be willfully explicit or eclectic to make a sexy and wholly enjoyable album.

TUESDAY, SEPT. 26: She's in control again: Janet Jackson returns with 20 Y.O. Miss Jackson-If-You're-Nasty is already making noise with her "Call On Me" duet with Nelly, and her sultry "So Excited" video has been heating up the airwaves. It's a big week for Janet: On Monday, she'll sit down on Oprah Winfrey's couch and talk about her life, including finding love with Jermaine Dupri and gaining – then losing – almost 60 lbs.!

I havent given a listen to her album, I'm not really excited and anticipated for it,
but is it any good?
I mean, I don't really like "Call On Me" and "So Excited".
Hope it'll grown on me, so I prob. will be getting a copy of it.
But, I like most of her older stuffs.

First, I will ignore Lecritikeur (typical response)
In reference to her album, I believe "Call On Me" and "So Excited" are the weaker tracks (and they are not bad). Her album is pretty good and suprised me.
Here is another review of 20 Y.O.:
How Janet got her groove back
NEWSDAY

DROPS
September 26, 2006
Janet Jackson opens her new "20 Y.O." (Virgin) album with a declaration of sorts, saying: "I want to keep it light. I don't want to be serious. I want to have fun."
But her real message is unspoken and carried through the album: "I'm still here. I win."
The ridiculous firestorm surrounding the accidental baring of her breast during a Super Bowl halftime number with Justin Timberlake in 2004 would have creatively paralyzed a lesser artist. For months, she was metaphorically stoned in pop culture's public square, not because it was deserved, but because it was convenient - an easy way to distract the country from the stumbling war in Iraq. (Isn't it odd that it took only weeks to hold congressional hearings on Nipplegate, but years to hold hearings on the lack of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq?)
Of course, all of that, as Jackson says a lot these days, is "the past." Her present is a happy one, judging from the sweetness and light that fill "20 Y.O.," a title that refers to the 20th anniversary of Jackson's first rebirth, when she released her breakthrough album "Control" (A&M).
On "20 Y.O." she skips all that drama of breaking free and asserting herself. She also keeps most of the tie-me-up, tie-me-down sexual raunch of her recent albums in the closet. This album is all about dancing and returning to her R&B roots. No envelope-pushing, no genre-busting. Just irresistible grooves, catchy hooks and lots of Janet.
The current single, "So Excited," is a good indicator of what to expect from the current incarnation of Jackson. It's streetwise, lighthearted and easily digestible, though her longtime collaborators Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, as well as boyfriend-producer Jermaine Dupri, keep the beats (in this case, using the catchiest part of Herbie Hancock's "Rockit") interesting, a mix of electro-funk and Dirty South bounce.
Songs such as "Get It Out Me" and the sun-kissed feel of "Enjoy" let Jackson give her breathy-voiced followers like Ciara and Rihanna something to work on for their new albums. The best of the midtempo bunch is "Daybreak," which welds the harmonic playfulness from her "Escapade" days with the hand-clapping simplicity of one of those snap-music groups like Cherish.
Jackson throws in some nice quiet-storm ballads as well, including the lilting "With U" and "Take Care," which both well suit her cooing vocals.
Unlike "Damita Jo" and "All For You" (both Virgin), "20 Y.O." doesn't have any filler. In fact, it comes closer to the every-song-could-be-a-single vibe than Beyoncé's "B'Day" (Sony Urban) or Timberlake's "FutureSex/LoveSounds" (Jive), even if it doesn't have the one massive breakout hit that each of those albums has.
Even though "20 Y.O." doesn't sound like the days of "Control," it has the same powerful feel of having six singles come from that album or a record-setting seven Top5 singles from "Rhythm Nation: 1814." There are snippets of Jackson's hits sprinkled throughout the album, though none of them last very long.
Jackson may not want to dwell in that past, either. After all, "20 Y.O." shows that her future could be even better. ("20 Y.O.," in stores today; grade: A-)

It's not odd. It's very sad and pathetic of our politicians.

Exclusive Review: L.T. Dinwiddie breaks down Janet Jackson's New Album
I know I told you all that I was going to be to new music critic for mediatakeout.com this week, but they have decided to go with someone else to review Janet's album. I want to make sure everyone is clear that O1LT.COM has no connection to the current review of Janet's Album on mediatkeout.com Here is my review for Janet. Read both of them and tell me which one you think is better? My rating system is as follows
W.B. - Worth Buying
B.L.-Bootleg It-$5.00
D.L.-Own it on the Low
NXT-Next Album Please (Whack!)
Like many of you when I heard Janet Jackson was making another album I thought myself "why bother"? After the infamous nipple gate incident, that has gotten her blacklisted from MTV, I didn't see a point. But more importantly I didn't think she could do it. Her last album "Damita Jo" was lack luster to say the least and bombed on Billboard, so I cast Janet on that island of has been's and looked on to the next artist to rightfully take her place. (Beyonce maybe)
But I have to admit she put her foot in this new album "Twenty Years Old". This new CD is marking Janet's twenty year career span in the business. The album is definitely retrospective with a modern hip hop enthused twist that is sure to surprise everyone who listens to it. Obviously music has changed a lot since Janet was on top of her game, and with Twenty Years Old, she didn't miss a beat. She busts open the gate on her new album with her current single "So Excited" feat. Khia. Listen I know her first single "Call on Me" was just OK, hell lets call it what it was it was whack, but when I tell you this new album is going blow you away is an understatement.
The minute you hear this CD your going to be surprised that the youngest Jackson, who is still older compared to all the other artists in the current music scene is still here and can still give these chicks a run for their money. Though her brother is certifiably over, Janet still has some bump in her bounce. And might I add what a freak she seems to be with three sexually laced songs "Do It to Me", "This Body" and "Take Care". I am "So Excited", no pun intended, to see her on tour. It seems Janet is giving all of us who doubted her the middle finger as she is sure to have yet another number one album up under her belt.
If you don't get this album then you're probably just a hater who is still waiting around for Michael to Return as the King of Pop.
Rating: W.B.+

Coolness. I will download the album right now.
But Janet is probably the ugliest artist right now. She looks like a drag queen with a very weird face. I think her tough excersies to lose weight had its own side effects.

MAKE SURE TO GET YOUR COPY OF JANET'S 20 Y.O. TODAY!!!!!!!
Remember, Janet will be on the TODAY SHOW on FRIDAY!
This is the treatment Janet gets from MTV:
Jackson Action: She's up against country hero Alan Jackson and his Like Red on a Rose and R&B crooner Freddie Jackson and his Transitions, but Janet hopes to edge them out with her own new album, 20 Y.O. With a five-part saga that includes the intro, three interludes and the outro, Janet manages to squeeze in 11 additional cuts, like "Get It Out Me," "Show Me" and "Do It 2 Me." The special edition boasts a bonus DVD with dance auditions, in-the-studio material and the making of the "Call on Me" clip. [MTV is banning Janet big time]
Here is another review from USA TODAY: 3 stars out of 4 stars
Janet Jackson, 20 Y.O. (***) After all these years, it seems Janet has finally laid all her burdens down. This time around, there are no controversies to address, no confessions to make or dark secrets to reveal. In celebrating the 20 years since she took Control of her life, she’s happy, carefree and still sexy. Boyfriend/producer Jermaine Dupri and longtime collaborators Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis have helped her craft an album of steamy dance grooves and breezy ballads for someone who is in love and apparently at peace. First single Call On Me with Nelly is a sweet, easygoing love song, but there are plenty of sassy club jams like So Excited and Get It Out Me. Enjoy finds her taking pleasure from the simple things in life, while Love 2 Love settles into a sultry slow grind. Janet still has the bounce — and the abs — to go at it with other singers barely as old as her career. It comes down to whether people still care now that the angst is gone.

Lecritikeur - you confuse me....one day you are bashing her and the next you praise her. Are you a fan or something else? BTW: Luda was at her release party last night....MTV is the problem, not the artists

nuroad, this is what i think:
1) "call on me" video was a huge mess
2) "so excited" video was a mess too cuz as i said in the video section of this forum, james kahn was unable to film at the right moment and so many of important "in your face" dance steps were missing (u can compare the oprah performance was just purely amazing)
3) the album is okay , at first i hated it cuz there's no song like the old janet i liked but the more i listened to it , especially after the janet performance at OPRAH, the more i kinda accept the fact that this is a new janet , more ghetto, more hip/hop than the pop icon janet i once knew. So i'm getting used to it. there are some cute songs in this album 20 Y.O. but no stand out songs but it's a much better album than justin timberjackson or bee-yonsay. Nevertheless, i think this album 20 YO is not THE album that people will remember of janet. I think this is a transitional album to make people love her again after the superbowl. NEXT ALBUm, in about 3 years 1/2 will be fantastic i have no doubts!!
she will be 43-44 years old and she will start again to think about serious matters and serious subjects other than sex, masturbation and love.
so voila.
she's not all that bad.
if you go on my blog, you will see that i'm a old fan from her and i write about her very often
i already met janet in person at the Buddha bar in paris when she was releasing the velvet rope album. I won a contest and i even have a red velvet rope that was needed to enter the party held in paris.
You know when you like an artist a lot, you cannot be pleased with average work. From beyoncé or justin or whoever else, if the album is average, then i'm like "okay whatever" but for major icons like janet or madonna, i do not accept not only mediocrity but even when an album is average or even good, that's not enough. Those people belong to the "must be an excellent album" type of people!!!
see what i mean?

I respect your opinion, man. I see what you mean. I understand where you are coming from now. You want to see Janet do well, but you will not just tolerate any work. I appreciate that in a fan...not following blindly. I am sure Jan would appreciate that too! Did you hear....expected sales around 360K...we will see!
