Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under and Forever and For Always >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I'm Gonna Getcha Good
Forget "What Made You Say That"; forget "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under". "Any Man of Mine" was the real beginning for Shania Twain. It was her first country #1 and her first Top 40 on the Hot 100 (#31).
Says Shania, "'Any Man of Mine' was absolutely a turning point in my career; there's no doubt about it. I think that that song and video, everything about it, really represents who I am as an artist. It shows the rocky edge that I have; it shows the country roots that I have. It's a very freestyle video; there's no fixed choreography. So, it was a real turning point for me and ever since then, I think it has set my own place in music. I've evolved since then, but I'm still pretty much that same artist."
The song introduced a new concept to country females of that day, as Shania asked not what can she do for her man, but what can her man do for her? She represented the new country female who demanded that her man put a ton of effort into a relationship instead of the other way around.
On a personal level, this song and I go way back. It has the distinction of being my first ever "favorite song". My four year-old self had never been so captivated by a song like this before. On the way to daycare, I made my mom play this song on the cassette. On the way back from daycare, I made my mom play this song on the cassette. Over, and over, and over. Any time I was in the car, I was listening to this song. I just think it's a perfect song. The classic "stomp, stomp, clap", the fiddles, just everything. This is what a woman wants! The dance segment at the end of the song is better than anything Janet, Britney, Beyonce, Madonna, and Gaga are ever doing. Just watch from 3:23 on in this video:
There's no doubt about it for me; this is the #1 Shania song.
This song definitely exceeded my expectations! I mean, it's an obvious Top 10 Shania track, but its #3 finish surprised me "That Don't Impress Me Much" was Shania's third consecutive Top 10 hit on the Hot 100, reaching #7. This song went Top 10 in a ton of other countries, too, including: Belgium, New Zealand, Norway, the Netherlands, Canada, Australia, Finland, Austria, Sweden, the UK, Denmark, and Switzerland. So, I guess I shouldn't be THAT surprised that it finished so highly!
One thing I love about this song is the simple, yet effective, songwriting. The first verse is extraordinary, in my opinon: "I've known a few guys who thought they were pretty smart, but you've got being right down to an art. You think you're a genius; you drive me up the wall. You're a regular, original know-it-all." I mean, come on! Who doesn't think that's awesome songwriting?
The video for "That Don't Impress Me Much" is one of Shania's best known videos. It features Shania, in all-leopard print, standing in the Mojave Desert waiting for her perfect man to arrive. Several men try to come to her rescue, but she rejects them all. The video shows a strong-willed woman who knows what she wants, and she isn't going to settle for just any guy that wants her. The video has had a long-lasting effect on culture, as Shania inspired my other fave, Lady Gaga, to wear a similar outfit:
To sum it up, "That Don't Impress Me Much" is a perfect combination of sass, wit, and sex, and is one of Shania's most memorable hits. It also gave us this awesome gif:
Wow, I expected Any Man of Mine to be higher... still glad it made top 4 though! That Don't Impress Me Much is such a well written song. I don't like the video though...
Top 2! I feel like you should do #1 first... or maybe #1 & #2 at the same time... hahaha
*Shocked on-lookers gasp from behind their computer screens*
Yes, I know. I fully expected this to be #1, too. The accomplishments attest to that assumption. Her biggest hit (#2 on the Hot 100). Her signature song. Winner of Best Country Song and Female Country Vocal Grammys. Nominations for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. First video by a country female to be nominated for a VMA. Charted on the Billboard Country, Pop, AC, Dance, and Latin charts (surely no other country artist has done that). The name of her upcoming Las Vegas show. The name of THIS RATE. It even has "one" in the title. But it's #2. C'est la vie. I don't think I need to say anything else about this classic.
Okay, I know I just made a good case for "You're Still the One" to be #1, but I think I can make a good argument for this song, too.
The opening track of Come on Over. The opening song of both of Shania's world tours. The opening song of Super Bowl XXXVII. The song is a born leader and it always gets the party started right. I guess it's ironic that the song that usually starts everything off will be the one to finish our countdown.
The seventh single from Come On Over is one of Shania's most iconic songs, but it only peaked #23 on the Hot 100. The song went Top 10 in New Zealand, France, the UK, US Country, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The video, a gender reversal of Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love", is Shania's most famous video, and you could make the argument that it's just as, or even more, iconic than Palmer's original.
The song's theme continues Shania's message of female empowerment that we've seen so many times in this rate. Shania & her gal pals are gonna go out, get drunk out of their minds, and they don't give a **** what you think about it! Although the song is strongly feminist, it doesn't take itself too seriously, as men can still rock to it. The top rated comment on the youtube video right now says, "I´m a 19 year old man who is heterosexual and totally loves this song!" The song was used in a famous Chevrolet commercial that is quite funny:
To sum it all up, Shania Twain was the leader of feminism in country music in the 90s, and "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" is a fitting way to end our countdown of Shania's singles. The song is guaranteed to put everyone, female or male, in a good mood and make everyone ready to party. Shania has never been typical, and she's always done things her own way. I guess it's fitting that the SEVENTH single from her third album would end up being her top-rated single. Who else can say that?!
