Well, that’s pretty obvious. “It” is zeitgeist, or an intangible variable that generates enough mass appeal to sustain interest in a distinct brand. Rihanna has “It.” Britney has“It.” Both singers have been panned for their “so-called” limited talent, and yet they maintain broad commercial appeal anyway. Britney was never the most beautiful girl or the best singer, but people couldn’t take their eyes off of her. Rihanna isn’t the best singer or performer, yet she sells millions of albums, covers countless magazines, sells out concerts, sets fashion trends . . . People buy products that she endorses, hang off of her every tweeted, printed, and spoken word, etc.
Does Rita have it? Only time will tell, but as of now, no. She doesn’t. Every time people see her, they think of Ri, and her voice and music have not been distinct enough to distinguish her from the pack. How do you think Lana Del Ray managed to sell over 1M albums WW without smash singles? Even though Lana’s a new artist, she has a distinct brand. She’s the Valley of the Dolls, gangsta, Nancy Sinatra. What is Rita? Many would be inclined to say “a knock off Ri Ri.”
