It's actually advised to breast feed a child as far up as the age of 3 but due to practical reasons this is very rare.

A female will continuing producing milk as long as there is demand for it so wherever you heard that is wrong. When you choose to wean a child the Mother will have to go through a very uncomfortable phase of being full of milk with nowhere for it to go before her body realizes it is no longer needed.
If you think about it this explains why you can milk cows etc that don't actually have young with them.
