100 years ago as of now, the massive RMS Titanic struck an iceburg and sunk, taking over 1500 souls with it. Between the 100 years that have passed between 1912 and 2012 the Titanic has become somewhat of a legend. Romanticized to the point its hard to believe it happened. Hollywood couldnt have written it better, from the band playing on, to the sacrifices.

It's only memorable because of the movie. But RIP.

Yes because all of the young people would be crying their heart outs about some ship that sank 100 years ago if the movie had not happened. That's totally how society works.

It was always a well-known and historic event, and regardless of whether or not the movie made it more personal for some people, over a thousand people died. Be respectful.

I didn't disrespect them. I only said people remember it because of the movie. The tragedy holds historical value, sure, but without the movie we would be seeing some Discovery Channel documentary about it and that would be it.

How many kids from today know about the Oklahoma bombing? How many kids in 80 years will? They sure will if there's a mega-succesful movie about it.

Were not saying "crying" but its still an event to be remembered, and so many movies, tv specials, shows, exhibits existed before the movie.
The event symbolizes the failure of technology and the arrogance of people against the power of nature, and even though the movie introduced us to characters who we could really know and feel for for the event, it is still an event to be remembered.
