Kylie Minogue
Britney Spears
Beyonce
Rihanna
Lady Gaga
Shakira
etc.
Being vocally versatile is just part of being a popstar, and there's a lot of people that can do it better than Kelly.
Y'all can shove it if you guys don't think these ladies listed aren't versatile and can't transition between several styles/genres. However limited the number may be, every single one of them can sing and emote a different style/genre of music exceptionally. That is one thing y'all can't discredit.
Let's not even go there; the one whistle note she hit was horrendous. Mariah is pretty much the only prominent singer in history to have perfect control of all parts of her voice - whistle, head, chest, lower register and even the "whisper register" that she invented. Kelly is a phenomenal vocalist but they aren't in the same league.
Anyway, yes, she is extremely versatile. But I can't say I've ever been particularly convinced when she's singing RnB/Soul/Blues. She can add runs, but she has never been able to properly adapt her voice and add the soul needed to properly pull off those genres IMO. I think it's that her voice has a gritty quality to it where it should be more smooth and flowing.
Yeah but Mariah completely lost that control. I think doing all those whistle notes must have damaged her vocal cords or something because if you watch any LIVE performances of her from the past five years she sounds like she has no breath control, and it takes a lot of effort for her to belt anything. It sounds breathy, and not in a good way.
Kelly is great at R&B. I think people dismiss a lot of her songs on Thankful that weren't singles. But there are:
(It's a duet with Tamyra Grey and sounds like a Destiny's Child song)
YOU THOUGHT WRONG
Kelly can do R&B.
(This one is a soulful epic love ballad. Please listen to this one, I think it's truly a gem...)
ANYTIME
Kelly can do Soul
And we all know she can do Country, Pop, Rock, Punk Rock and even Dance (If I Can't Have You and Stronger). The one thing she's stayed away from is urban stuff. I'm going to be honest and say that even though it's not vocally demanding, I don't think Kelly could pull off that swagger. I'd be pleasantly surprised if she did though.
I'm not trying to be a stan, but I don't know any other artist who can pull off as many genres and sound that great. I feel like Mariah could in her prime but her voice has deteriorated a lot. Christina has the talent but hurt herself vocally with poor technique and still I don't think she's covered as many bases as Kelly. P!nk is brilliant but couldn't do those big ballads because her voice is suited for that rockier stuff, even though she has the chops to hit the notes of course. She's one to look out for, though. I mean, people might think that their faves are stronger vocally but I don't think you can deny that Kelly is the most versatile

Last line, I'll ignore.
Maybe they can to an extent, but I don't see Britney/Kylie/Shakira jumping from R&B to Rock to Country with the flip of the switch. Beyonce and maybe Rihanna have the vocal capacity to attempt it but idk... Even when all these artists actually do sing songs in different genres, they don't do much to alter their voices, they sound pretty similar.
With Kelly, you hear a clear difference in technique: the runs, the amount of head voice, the styling, and she actually alters the tone, something that's very hard to do. Kelly can do it and HAS done it. None of these artists have. Singing a ballad or adding some electric guitar does not suddenly change your genre even if you're emoting the song well. You've done nothing to study each genre and tailor your voice, which is what Kelly does. Sorry Edge, you got it wrong with this one
Kelly has only done one whistle note in her whole career. There's no sense in comparing them.
I think her whisper register is annoying in all honesty. Being able to do that doesn't make her more of a vocal chameleon than Kelly.
I think Kelly is a better pop singer than Mariah. She doesn't show as much range as Mariah (but she can if she wanted to based off live performances), but she has more substance in her voice. It's fuller and has a better tone to me. Kelly also does use her head voice a lot. And it sounds amazing. Go to 2:50
And to get things straight, I am a big Mariah fan. She's amazing in her own right, but Kelly is the better singer.
Well that's the whole point. Mariah has mastered all parts of her voice and Kelly hasn't. Not her lower register, not her head voice, not her whistle register.
It's the same with all singers - they have parts of the voice they favour and parts they aren't as good at/don't use. Mariah is just completely unique in that all her's are brilliant and she can switch through them seamlessly. People go on about how great her whistle notes are, but she's also shown herself to be far more comfortable and have far more range in her lower register than any current singer too.
And no, she couldn't show as much range as Mariah - Mariah goes a full octave higher and a full octave lower than her.
That's fine if you prefer Kelly's voice, but it's pretty much fact that Mariah can do far more with her voice than anyone else (and if we're talking about Mariah in her prime, it's not even worth having this discussion). There's a reason why the only person the media rivaled her against was Whitney.

Oh no, I agree that Kelly is the most versatile voice in terms of singing a load of different genres, but I still just don't think (and I listened to those videos) her voice properly pulls of the RnB and soul tracks.
In that post I was more refuting that guy who was saying that she's a better singer than Mariah. That's definitely something I don't agree with. Mariah has struggled (and flopped ) a lot since the Emancipation era, but both her studio and live vocals during the MCIIYou era were amazing IMO.
Anyway, I think the only person out right now who could rival Kelly's versatility is JoJo. Like Kelly, she has shown that she can manipulate her voice to suit a load of different genres. She just hasn't sung enough yet.

You're right, Jojo could go there as well, I think. Maybe not country but she could do urban, pop, a little rock (her voice isn't as powerful as Kelly's yet, see Kelly's rendition of Seven Nation Army) R&B for sure. She's a good candidate, I agree needs time to reach Kelly's level. And we all know Mariah can SANG. It actually makes me sad to hear the state of her voice now, because I didn't know about her when I was younger and so couldn't enjoy when she was in better shape. If she was at her prime still I definitely would've stanned for her. A beautiful and powerful voice is something I adore in an artist, which is why I love Kelly, JoJo, Pink, Beyonce and Rihanna's getting there too etc.
