By that a lot of singers CAN be versatile around the world, but i think what makes an artist chamaleonic is actually capture those styles on her/his records...wich is what will remain in the future for the new generations.
No, what makes an artist versatile is being able to sing many different genres well. Not being able to capture a certain style on a record.
Watch this when Kelly was in high school. You can not tell me she sounds the same on her pop music as she does here. (this is just one of MANY examples, but I'm picking the most obvious one)
all your doing is proving that she's a MIMIC. Like a musical theatre actress who plays different roles.

Give me authenticity anyday.
Even if you think she's a so-called mimic (which is clearly untrue, but whatever), the fact still remains that she's able to sing any genre effortlessly and convincingly. No one else is able to pull that all off like her, sooo, in that itself, she is "authentic" AND unique.

In that case any talented and well trained singer is chamaleonic, the difference is the work that that artist is showing to the public, as her/his material in that particular moment...in singers case the records...and of course she/he has to do it well.
I really don't think anyone is as versatile as Kelly, not Christina, not Bjork, and none of the other artists mentioned in this thread. Why can't you all just admit that?
Are you really trying to tell me that this flat note at 1:15 that she had to scale upto is even remotely comparable to all that Mariah can do in this register?
As someone earlier replied to (actually to a Mariah fan), being able to hit a note isn't good enough. It's the control and mastery of that note that makes it truly impressive

I don't know what the hell a whisper register is (and how it proves someone is a more versatile singer), but Kelly can EFFORTLESSLY control all those other aspects of her voice. I would prove them with YouTube videos, but I know you won't watch them.
Actually, her lower register is very limited (she can only reach an Eb3), she rarely uses her head voice (which isn't great either), and - as we have already covered - though it's impressive that she can hit it, her whistle register isn't anything outstanding.
Mariah is well-known for experimenting with different tones and timbres of her voice. The whisper register is that soft and angelic voice she often sings in and contrasts with her powerful chest vocals. For example in the early verses here:
Mariah is capable of singing in a thick, husky tone for Urban music and then completely thinning it out at will for pop songs and other genres. And her whistle notes also range between being gritty and soft at will. She's versatile not only in genres, but in her voice too.

Kelly is more convincing to me when singing soul/blues than Mariah. I think you NEED a gritty quality to pull it off. And for the record, Kelly can sound smooth and flowing when she wants. She adds the grit in order to make herself sound more convincing.

Because is a poll/question and people think different.

Obviously Mariah has perfected her whistle register. The comparison is pointless.

Kelly has only done one whistle note in her whole career. There's no sense in comparing them.

I think her whisper register is annoying in all honesty. Being able to do that doesn't make her more of a vocal chameleon than Kelly.

I think Kelly is a better pop singer than Mariah. She doesn't show as much range as Mariah (but she can if she wanted to based off live performances), but she has more substance in her voice. It's fuller and has a better tone to me. Kelly also does use her head voice a lot. And it sounds amazing. Go to 2:50
And to get things straight, I am a big Mariah fan. She's amazing in her own right, but Kelly is the better singer.
