Jessica Simpson may have a rude awakening when sales figures are counted for last week’s CDs today.
Simpson’s "A Public Affair" stood at No. 52 last night on Amazon.com, well below still-unreleased albums by her generational peers Beyonce and Justin Timberlake.
Even worse, most of the reviews written by fans and customers on the Amazon.com page for "A Public Affair" give the album one or two stars and are heavily critical.
It could be that Simpson, like Paris Hilton, has finally oversaturated her market with style (so to speak) over substance. Hilton’s crummy debut album was hovering around No. 95 last night on Amazon.
Of course, Amazon isn’t the only reference point for sales of pop CDs, but it’s a fairly good measure of consumer interest. Right now, Bob Dylan’s "Modern Times" is lodged at No. 1 with no signs of slipping. The great American musical icon has received countless kudos for his latest offering.
If Simpson, like Hilton, actually has tanked with this release, we can expect serious repercussions at her label, Epic, a division of Sony.
In the last week, both the company and Simpson’s people tried to stir up interest in the divorced newlywed by giving both People and Us Weekly “exclusives” on her “romance” with another Sony artist — the actually talented John Mayer.
But the people I spoke to at Sony told me on Friday that they had no idea if such a thing were true, and that no one had ever seen the two together.
“I think a date constitutes being seen in public at dinner or something,” laughed one insider. “So far, that hasn’t happened.”
Simpson has never been a heavyweight as a singer, but made her reputation as the comedic foil to ex-husband Nick Lachey on MTV’s "Newlyweds."
Like many of today’s performers, she seems more interested in generating publicity than in doing anything remotely linked to artistry. Consequently, we’d be hard-pressed to name a Simpson song, let alone hum a few notes. Her new album, "A Public Affair," doesn’t do much to dispel that idea.
One last-ditch effort has been made to save Simpson’s album, however: The next single from the album, called “I Belong to Me,” was originally left off the CD — it was a bonus track for Wal-Mart customers — because Simpson didn’t like it. But in a poll, fans voted it their second favorite track after the title song, so it’s back.
Luckily, Epic won't have to worry if Jessica goes south. Its Shakira/Wyclef Jean record, "Hips Don't Lie," is the biggest hit of the year. And rock group The Fray is about to break through courtesy of exposure on "Grey's Anatomy."

I didn't want her to flop this badly but I don't think this album will get gold. She will probably sell 95K this week... then -> 60K -> 45K -> 30K...

Beyonce is beyond overrated....they're over-over-over-overrated. Justin is just plain overrated.

Wait a second...that doesn't look like that much of a flop so far...if she breaks 100K, then she's iight. 150K would be a decent debut. Let's hope for a bit of success for her. ^ _ ^

LATEST: JESSICA SIMPSON has slammed tabloid reports she is dating singer JOHN MAYER and insists the two are just friends.
The 25-year-old star appeared on US talk show THE VIEW today (05SEP06), where she discussed the rumours surrounding her personal life.
Simpson appeared on the first day of the 10th season of the show as a favour to new co-host ROSIE O'DONNELL, who supported her when she was first starting out.
O'Donnell asked, "Is everything going good for you, you're in a good place, you're happy...'
Simpson replied, "I'm in a really good place..."
O'Donnell then tried to get to the bottom of tabloid reports that she is dating Mayer, prodding her with, "You don't want to say, but maybe?"
Simpson sighed and shook her head saying, "I love it that she just goes right there....I'm actually not dating John Mayer."
O'Donnell feigned shock saying, "You mean People magazine was wrong?"
The American publication featured Simpson on the cover last week (ends03SEP06) with the headline, 'I'm in love,' referring to Simpson's reported new relationship with Mayer.
She added, "And they put this quote saying that I'm in love! You know, he's my friend, I've known him for a couple years."

I agree it doesn't look that bad:
Jessica's previous debuts:
1st album: 65,000 (went double platinum)
2nd album: 119,000 (went Gold)
3rd album: 65,000 (went double platinum or Triple?)
It looks like she never has high debuts.

How sad, she deserves more. APA is actually a pretty decent album. I hope it picks up with I Belong to Me, which I haven't heard because it's not on her cd.

I really hope she can find some sort of image to go along with her next album... this whole "f*ck Nick, I'm gonna party" message that APA sends out really bothered me. If she really didn't like I Belong to Me (which I don't like, btw), then she shouldn't have had it on the voting list. You should never allow a song you don't like to be made into a single.
Oh, and the only real interesting thing about the article was the last part about The Fray's exposure through Grey's Anatomy. I love the band, and I love the show. What kind of exposure does the writer of the article mean? I know How To Save A Life was featured in an episode and a current promo for the 3rd season, but will this EVER get a video?

I was looking at the new HDD percentiles and Jessica was trailing Bob not too fra behind the whole time but in like the 43% his album took off. If shes at 65k now and theres a whole 50% left, i think she'll do better than what they predicted her at ... probably like 100k flat which isnt too bad.
I admit, i really expected her to do more just because of how famous she is but then again nick has sabotaged her so I guess we'll see. I mean, this will be like her second highest opening because she never opens well and even when she did with Irresistable, it ended up short in the long run (i have no idea why)
I have faith she'll be okay in the long run
