Nelly Furtado released a low quality snippet of her first single, “Big Hoops (Bigger the Better)”, on YouTube early Monday. The clip features the song’s catchiest moments over a slightly distorted instrumental.
Those that thought that Nelly would abandon the sound that made her so popular during Timbaland’s resurgence a little over a decade ago are mistaken. The production is Timbaland circa 2006, no new tricks whatsoever - no need to elaborate. (Darkchild?!) The verses see Nelly in full nasal accent firing off line after line in typical Timbaland refrain, lots of broken word repetition here. “Pant legs so white, I got my backpack on, I’m gonna hear my favorite song”. The chorus is a non-event with her asking “everybody [to] say hey-ey-ey-ey” leading to a post-chorus of “bet you never seen something like that? Bet you never heard something like that?”
Why, Nelly, yes - I think we have.
It all feels a little sleepy and I wouldn’t be surprised if most listeners find themselves zoning out before it’s conclusion with it’s endless repetition of banal hooks. As if Nelly is aware of this fact, she pops in toward the end for a spoken word inclusion, “You thought this song was over? Nope,” followed by a hyper instrumental breakdown of sorts. Nothing particularly special, but at least you will be made aware of it’s conclusion before Loose comes on next on your iTunes.
Maybe it’s not a completely terrible song, but throughout her career Nelly has excelled through progression - not regression. “Hoops” would fit comfortably on Loose and would probably not get the single treatment at that.
Timbaland’s typical sound hasn’t produced a hit for several years now. Nelly’s recent Greatest Hit’s project didn’t fare too well either. How will audiences respond? I would look to Universal’s promotional strategy, this song isn’t gonna sell itself.
