The Titanic is not something that should be taught in school. Ships sinks every day, and the Titanic's sinking is not even the most fatal of them. It just received the most attention, and that was partly because of the movie.

I agree that it is ridiculous not to know it actually existed, however it's a matter of general knowledge, not part of the school curicculum.

No, everything in the movie other than the Jack - Rose romance is real, including the exact way the ship sank, the members of the crew and their reactions to the collision, etc.

This wasn't something that was taught in my History class though, or school for that matter. I learned about it thanks to The History Channel.

Anyway,I knew the Titanic was real since 2001-02.Y'all who are unaware are late.

Obviously it received attention 100 years ago, but it would not be as popular without the movie now, since much larger, faster and more luxurious ships have been build. The movie contributed to its current legendary status, I didn't say it was the only factor.

By the way, the ship was deemed 'unsinkable' after the sinking.

when I was five I already knew Titanic was based on a true story/accident from 1912

I only watched the movie a couple of years ago, but I knew of its occurrence for as long as I can remember.
