2005 had some bad award winners, though 2006 was just ridiculous in that aspect.
But really, 2004 had arguably the worst major music award performance EVER(Hoobastank's utter burial of "The Reason") and that alone puts 2004 as the worst, above all of the others.
Okay I just saw 2006 on Saturday Night (Re-Run). I actually thought it wasn't half has bad has I expected it to be. Some of the performances were hot, especially Beyonce. (I missed Shakira because I turned it on too late ). Christina's performance was probably the best out of all of them. P!ATD was the worst, ugh, the vocals were bad. They killed the song. Overall it could have been better, but it wasn't horrible. I won't say 2006 was the worst year, unless were talking the winners.
There were a lot of performers and not enough time... so they put several of them together depending on the music they do. There was that one with 3 rock bands back-to-back-to-back (Hoobastank, Jet, and Yellowcard, I think) that was absolutely horrible. Usher's performance wasn't THAT good on hindsight... but "Yeah!" and "Confessions" were hot then, so it didn't really seem so when the VMAs took place. The Lil' Jon/"Lean Back" performances weren't that good, the Nelly/ Xtina performance I can barely remember, and I can barely remember Outkast closing the show.
On the other hand, Kanye's performance was OK (with a nice surpise bringing out Chaka Khan), and Alicia Keys' performance of "Higher Ground" along with Lenny Kravitz & Stevie Wonder was good. Jessica SImpson's could've been better... but that Robbie WIlliams song brings me memories. Still, when (arguably) the best performance of the VMAs is The Polyphonic Spree's... then they weren't that good. Oh yeah... plus, no host.
