After all, only his pop-friendly songs were hits (So Sick & Sexy Love) while his Usher wannabe mediocrity failed to garner much success (When You're Mad, even though it went Top 20, it was based entirely on buzz).

Neyo had great marketing, he just picked the wrong singles. He did come off as an Usher wannabe tho.

Bad single choices isn't what I consider overall "great marketing." Like you just said, he came off as an Usher wannabe despite possessing more creative talent than the turtle creature.
Probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite on the album behind Sexy Love and Time.
I mean he's good, but he's not amazing.
