Before I became invested in words & their meanings, I used to write stories. Short stories, plays, poetry, etc for my theater elective & English class and a lot of the time I would get feedback from my teachers that my plot was too "generic", I figured "generic" was a word to mean cheesy or corny and it wasn't until I got really into music when I learned what it actually meant.
Generic > General > Common
The word, "generic" comes from "general" which automatically takes any difficulty of comprehending what this word means from an 8 to a 2.
