AFFAIR TO REMEMBER

ON Jessica Simpson's first post-divorce CD - "A Public Affair" (Epic) - the busty blond beauty lays down an effervescent album that's rich in dance energy and pop power.

Unlike her ex, Nick Lachey, whose recent CD was an exercise in wimpy, self-pitying mope, Miss Simpson has gotten over the pain of divorce - or at least she's keeping it mostly to herself.

On "Swing With Me," Jessica goes retro, tapping Louis Jordan jump-jive swing - and in the next breath she gets suggestive and sweaty in the baby-got-back funk of "Push Your Tush."

Rather than presenting a themed album like Madonna's dance record or Christine Aguilera and OutKast's dirty-'30s discs, Simpson chooses variety to showcase her voice. She covers the bases and even gets her hip-pop cranking in the raucous and musically aggressive "Fired Up" and "B.O.Y." And the girl-next-door ballad "Between You & I" could have been snatched from the Leslie Gore songbook.

For those looking for the tracks of her tears, you have to read the liner notes where she thanks her sister Ashlee for crying with her and listening to Patty Griffin music "on repeat." Tie that to the last song called "Let Him Fly," written by Griffin, and poof, Lachey is gone.

Simpson would have been wise to steer clear of this weeper - at least it's the last song on the disc and thus easy to skip.

The biggest flaw of this record is in her vocal delivery. While it's certainly her own, it's been so often aped by pop newcomers, time has made her sound seem generic. Despite the lack of a clear-cut vocal trademark, she's dodged sounding cheesy with these upbeat and propulsive songs.

On "A Public Affair," Simpson sounds excited to be singing again.

Jessica Simpson may not be Mensa material. But even she seems smart enough to know that nobody takes her seriously. And nobody wants to hear her whine about her divorce -- except for maybe her ex, and he's already cornered the market on that.

So on her fourth album A Public Affair, the newly single singer sticks it to Nick and gives everyone else just what they want: A catchy, cutesy, carefree batch of featherweight dance-pop singles.

The title cut and If You Were Mine are bubbly baubles that bounce along like Madonna singles from the '80s. The sexy B.O.Y. makes inspired use of the opening riff from The Cars' Just What I Needed. The '70s pop of Walkin' 'Round in a Circle pays homage to Fleetwood Mac's Dreams.

The electro-jazzy Swing With Me revamps Louis Prima's Sing Sing Sing. Ditto her cover of Dead or Alive's You Spin Me Round (Like a Record). And while the slinky hayseed funk of Push Your Tush is a hoot for all the wrong reasons -- chiefly Simpson vocal ad-libs like "****-a-doodle-doo!" and "Let's get some grub!" -- the Ohio Players groove at its heart is irresistible.

Through it all, her producers (who include Scott Storch and Jam and Lewis) keep the mood breezy, light and playful, occasionally letting Jess strut her vocal stuff but never letting her fall prey to overblown Idol-style melismathons.

On the downside, most of the best cuts come at the front of the 54-minute disc, which winds down with a handful of dull ballads.

But even half a good album is enough to make A Public Affair a swell coming-out party -- and Simpson's most enjoyable disc to date. Seriously.

Poor Jessica. I liked her album, I'd give it an 8. But it's a shame for her she doesn't have a show on TV this time, and that's why she's goin' to sell less then 100k for the first week.

What's her next single? I heard it would be 'I belong To Me', if it is, I think it will hardly become a hit.

For now, I like 'Fired Up' and 'You Spin Me (LAR)',,,, I think these must be singles.

I think this deserves so much more recognition than its been given. Its such a great, fun record, I dont understand how any fan of POP could not love it. Its the kind of album the charts havent seen in a long time with all this hip hop trash coming out these days. A full 10/10 from me!!
