What has YOUR fave contributed to music?
So many of you claim that your faves' songs are iconic, changed music, influenced an entire generation, etc. This is where you spill everything your fave has done to change the music biz.
Quote:
Mariah Carey influenced the entire sound of the 90s. Her singles from her first two albums, such as "Vision of Love" and "Can't Let Go", foreshadowed and defined what was to be the staple sound of 90s: heavy R&B ballads. She, along with other artists such as R. Kelly, Janet Jackson, TLC and Boyz II Men brought contemporary R&B to the mainstream in the 90s. Aside from a dance hit here and there, most chart-toppers were R&B songs in the 90s. This is seen in the success of "One Sweet Day", Mariah's duet with Boyz II Men, which topped the Hot 100 for 16 weeks, the longest for any song. Later in the 90s, she also brought hip-hop/pop collaborations to the mainstream, but I'll elaborate on that later.
Mariah also contributed much to the art of remixing songs. Before 1995, a remix of a song was simply the song's original vocals slapped onto a dance beat. However, after Mariah began making hip-hop remixes in 1995, most of her remixes features rerecorded vocals, guest rappers, more elaborate beats, and even a new music video for the remix. Examples of this include "Fantasy" (Bad Boy Remix) in 1995, "Always Be My Baby" (So So Def Remix) in 1996, "Honey" (Bad Boy Remix) in 1997, and "Heartbreaker" (Desert Storm Remix) in 1999.
Not only this, but Mariah is the reason why songs such "Take Care" and other rap/pop collaborations exist. In 1995, she remixed her song "Fantasy" with the rapper Ol' Dirty Bastard to appeal to more urban audiences - a collaboration unheard of and never attempted before at the time. This hip-hop/pop mix brought the newly created genre to the mainstream. In the latter part of the 1990s, songs with rapped verses and sung choruses, such as "Hypnotize" by the Notorious B.I.G., "I'll Be Missing You" by Puff Daddy and Faith Evans, and Carey's own "Heartbreaker" with Jay-Z dominated the charts. Today, these type of collabs are so common that we take them for granted. But had it not been for the "Fantasy" remix, these would've probably never existed.
