The article does say there are dozens of various models and these are just prototype so I expect them to look alot more wearable upon release.

Yeah it's dumb, but tons of people like and want to do this, as you can see with the popularity of Foursquare and various other checkin apps, which is why Google showed it off.
My biggest problem still is I still don't like speaking to my phone, so I don't know about talking to my glasses. This may become mainstream enough to where it just doesn't seem so dumb but as it currently stands I never use voice commands unless I'm in my car. To this day I don't even like using Bluetooth earpieces.
