Amen. Man, I remember back in the day she used to team up with Timbaland and Missy, and they were always with Magoo, Ginuwine, and Playa. Back then it was the Brandy, Monica, and Aaliyah days. To this day she is still the classiest and warmest woman to hit the R&B scene in our generation to me. Rest In Peace. We will always remember you.

5 years ago, I woke up late on a Sunday to find out Aaliyah's plain had went down. This didn't compute immediately. I refused to believe she was dead. Instead, I told myself that she was somehow hard to find. This was obviously untrue. I came to realize the truth a day later when BET aired a special 106&Park focusing only on the legacy of Aaliyah. I came out of shock and realized she was gone for good. It was actually alot for me to handle. I know, I probably sound insane. But for someone like me who was raised on mostly Urban music, it was a BIG deal. The fact that she was so young also made an impact on me. It can all be taken away when you least expect it.

With that being said, I'd like to address several issues concerning Aaliyah.
-The day Aaliyah died was also the day she gained HALF of her current fanbase. People pretended as if they were always a fan of her work when in reality, they never cared. They treat Aaliyah as if she some groundbreaking legend. She wasn't.
-R.Kelly, Timbaland, & Missy made Aaliyah the artist she had grown to be before her death. Aaliyah RARELY had any input in her work, other than the vocals.
-A month before her death, the release of 3rd LP came. The album debuted at #2 with good numbers but quickly sunk. It was also accompanied by a flop single. If Aaliyah never died, I'm sure she would have probably fallen out of the musical limelight, entirely.
-Aaliyah was the least classy of the young R&B females. Sorry, but it's the sad truth. Her debut album, which was released when she was 14, dealt with the sexual aspects of relationships. Her contemporaries, Brandy & Monica, never discussed sex in their music until much later. Lets not forget, Aaliyah also married a 21 year old perve while the promotion of the album was going on.

What is stated above is in no way my opportunity to bash Aaliyah. I am in now saying Aaliyah was a talentless or classless individual because that is true. A few things that have been said for the past 5 years have irked me so I'm using this as my chance to lay it all out.

I had been a fan of Aaliyah's since she first came out. Right around the time she passed away it really seemed like she was on the verge of becoming really huge. It was a shame that she as taken so soon but it's comforting knowing that she's in a better place.

As far as the above post, you're entitled to your opinion whether I like it or not. But before you go calling Aaliyah talentless simply because she didn't have input on her music, consider this. Aaliyah realized what her range was and always considered herself a performer; not a songwriter or a producer. She knew what songs worked for her and did those and knew which ones didn't and passed those on. She was a performer and did a good job at it.

I'd argue that she was a groundbreaking artist, but not in the way most people think of someone being a groundbreaking artist - and therefore she's not taken seriously. She was not a lyricist or a producer, but she was a vessel. A true throwback to the days of standards singers - I'd dare say she was this generation's Ella Fitzgerald (without the crystal clear phrasing).

But seriously, even if she had little imnput she always had great songs. And those bandwagon Aaliyah fans piss me off >_<

I Discover her music with "Are You That Somebody?"(i really loved this song) ..... I liked "I Dont wanna" , "Try again "( love it too) , "Come Back In One Piece" , "We Need a Resolution" before her death but i was not a big fan of hers ............ i remember going to the store looking for "Are You That Somebody?" without knowing her name looking for the CD ..LOL...... when she died i remember it was at night and they said it in the news and i was spreading the rumor everywhere and nobody believed me.... anyways i never consider her a BIG name in music...
