Madonna: 'MDNA' Has a Poor Debut On UK Charts
Madonna 'MDNA' Has Soft Debut On UK Charts With Just 56K Sold

Quote:
Madonna‘s MDNA album debuts at number 1 on the British charts, but it’s a soft landing.
According to Billboard, MDNA had sales of 56,000– very low for a number 1 album debut. In contrast, Bruce Springsteen‘s Wrecking Ball hit number 1 two weeks ago with 74,000 copies. Here in the US, Billboard is reporting–just as I did last week–that Lionel Richie is ahead of Madonna in the race for number 1. Those final numbers won’t be in until late Tuesday. But Richie is substantially ahead of Madonna on ITunes and amazon.com, the two chief sellers of music at this point.
All of this suggests that Madonna–who will no doubt make a bundle on her international tour–is like a lot of other “older” acts. She’s just not selling CDs, whether it’s physical discs or downloads. In the UK, she sold fewer copies in her debut than a lot of other recent acts, including the Military Wives and One Direction. The latter, a boy band from “X Factor,” sold 176,00 copies in its debut.
MDNA has not spawned a hit single, although a sexy video from the album is popular. But there’s no iconic song like a Madonna hit of the past–a “Vogue” or “Like a Prayer” or “Material Girl.” And that doesn’t help, because without a lead track, MDNA is going to have a tough time. Stay tuned for the US numbers later today or tomorrow.
