Shakira is a Latin artist. Even with a new management, new producers she's working with, and new musical direction. Nothing is going to change that. Spanish music is extremely limited in today's society, especially among Latin women. She has to continue being the voice of South America. She's the most influential Latina singer in the industry. Not everything has to be about success or being on top, it's about having musical integrity. I've noticed some of the Shakira fans, as of late, have been too focused on her having commercial success, but it wouldn't be ATRL if it wasn't.
Acclaimed, I'm not directing this towards you, but in general.
Shakira is a multilingual artist who was born in Colombia. It doesn't mean that she inherently makes "latin" music, that latin music is necessarily her main interest and influence, nor that she must continue to make latin music because it's some kind of responsibility. She's capable of creating a wide range of music and she enjoys working in this way. Her main influences as a musician were British rock bands, and that's reflected in her earlier material.
I would prefer if she did not typecast herself. Recently, her single choices have been feeding into stereotypes. The "Sale El Sol" album features rock songs ("Devocion" and "Tu Boca") more like her earlier material and yet she's mainly releasing merengue songs which are nothing like her earlier works, even if they may appear to be a fit for Shakira.
^^^ This is the first song that brought her great fame. It's a Pop/Rock song with no noticeable latin influences.
^^^ Another one of her earliest hits. It's a rock song driven with an electric guitar.
Sometimes when Shakira makes "latin" music, especially in her recent singles, it seems as a deliberate attempt to put out what the public expects of her rather than a genuine reflection of her interests.

i know right....and i love her rock songs way more than her "latin" songs.....but hey she tried it....remember don't bother? she was coming all rock influence but La Tortura didn't let it happen. So HIPS came out...
I mean the girl have been trying, its hard when they have this latin image of you.

Yeah, I doubt Shakira and her record label ever expected "La Tortura" to be that big of a hit. It was a monster single, especially for a Spanish-language song.
Part of the problem with "Don't Bother" and "Oral Fixation Vol. 2" is that Shakira took too long working on the album. She enlisted the help of The Matrix, producers who were super successful for short period of time but had fallen out of favor by the time Shakira's album and lead single were released.
Now, Shakira understands that she has to work a bit faster to release music that's more relevant and more suited for the current music environment.
