Just when you think all of the saddest uses for social media have been discovered, someone finds a way to do something even more depressing. For instance, a woman in Taiwan, Claire Lin, killed herself earlier this month while chatting on Facebook with nine of her friends—none of whom alerted the authorities.

It was Lin's 31st birthday, and she was apparently unhappy because she felt ignored by her boyfriend, and he had not come home to celebrate her birthday with her. She slowly asphyxiated herself on smoke from charcoal while she was chatting with nine of her Facebook friends about what she was doing. She even uploaded pictures from her phone that show a charcoal barbecue burning near two stuffed animals and a room filled with smoke fumes. Chung Hsin, one of the friends she was chatting with, said to her, "Be calm, open the window, put out the charcoal fire, please, I beg you." But she replied, "The fumes are suffocating. They fill my eyes with tears. Don't write me anymore."

This went on for 67 minutes, and during that time her other chat buddies tried to stop her and track her down too, but nobody called the police. It's not known whether any of them had her phone number or actually knew where she lived—which could have made it difficult to send the police anyway. Her body was found by her boyfriend the next morning when he got home, and he told her family, who had obviously not been aware of what she'd been doing. Her Facebook account revealed her last words. She said, in Chinese, "Too late. My room is filled with fumes. I just posted another picture. Even while I'm dying, I still want FB (Facebook). Must be FB poison. Haha." Oh no. It's hard to think of a more tragic way to sign off from the world.
