This is incredibly sad. But I just don't understand how they knew he was gay? Was he flamboyant? Did they assume he's gay? I know it doesn't really matter because NO human should be tortured like this but I'm just confused with how his sexuality played a role in this.

I think he was drunk when these strangers invited him. It's kinda common to meet people in random places in my country, we are too friendly sometimes I think.
