I just saw Austin Powers 3 over the weekend. Knowles did a nice job considering she is known for her Mainstream songs rather than acting. Is she as good in her other flicks?

Yesterday there waas an advance screening In san Diego And this is the reviews and comments that those ppl gave :
Quote:
(Minimal spoliers ahead....)
Dreamgirls is AMAZING! Rush to see it in December, pay off you friends to go to a screening early on, or just pray to Jesus you get a random lucky opportunity like I did. Even without a/c in the theater (It was so humid towards the back of the theater!) at the Pacific Gas Lamp and some stupid sound issues, this movie could not be stopped. People went crazy for it!
This movie is my favorite recent movie musical of the modern era. Dare I say, it tops Chicago! It's just a different story (drama with heart and humor opposed to a musical comedy) thats just as amazing on screen! I must confess I have been somewhat disappointed with the recent fare in the last two years or so in terms of musicals on the big screen. Boy, does this movie reinvent the genre again in a big way!
I wasn't too familiar with this material as a theater piece, having really only heard the Jennifer Holiday song from the many American Idol auditions I have watched. I am just a huge film guy/nerd at heart and love seeing movies before they get released of course, so I was curious to see why everyone was waiting for this film with baited breath. Between the press, fans, and the posts on here, there has been a lot of buzz about this movie.
It literally blew me away. The story is very solid with a great balance of music, comedy, and drama. I think I sat with my jaw on the floor for most of the movie. The style of this movie is both period and timeless. The colors, the shapes, the choreography of both the cameras and the actors is just incredible.
The casting is spot on. I will say that Jennifer Hudson had some big shoes to fill, and boy did she ever. Her version of "I Am Telling You..." is just a show stopper. She packs a lot of punch when she sings and this song is a knockout!
I really couldn't tell which of the songs were new and which songs were from the stage show, which is a good thing that they blend with the old material from the 80s. However, I did hear someone talking about the new song called "Listen" which is a big solo song for Beyonce towards the end of the movie. It starts off like a soft simple ballad, and ends up building to a very powerful song for her.
Well, I don't want to say too much... Just wanted to get a quick post out before tomorrow. I have been an avid reader on the boards since I discovered it in film school, and decided it was time for my first post after this genius screening of Dreamgirls.
But if anyone wants a full review or has specific questions, please feel free! I will try my best to answer them. I am fast becoming a big fan of this material and researching the show a bit more so I can talk more frankly about it. Shoot me an email!

Well, I know Im being a bit out of order, not posting my review in the 'all who went post here" thread, but something tells me, this is okay
Well, this si something I wont forget, mainly because I shared this experience wit so many. Most of you all knoq that I woke up this morning without knowing my new friends flick and steve! not to mention knowing NOTHING of any screening of Dreamgirls. So 11 o clock, a post was made, and next thing you know, I'm driving 2 hours and a half to see the movie. Well I get there an meet up with flik who gives me the star treatment, and is in the back of the line...Well eh walks right up to the front, gives them information, and only as two new friends can do it best, we walk in.
Well I came in to see folks all of kind, and there was my chair in the theatre- THEE PERFECT SEAT- IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ISLE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROW OF SEATS!! perfection. Well I got to know my new friends including wave, and -like i said- steve, and flik- Oh my god, wonderful people! ...OKAY OKAY -I ll get on with the movie.
So after a while, they tell us the whole thing about it being a test screening and all that- well everything comes on, and I dont want to give out too much
but the crowd experiences something that I can only imagine was felt at the original musical. Flash and camera technique.
Let me say this, THE COMMERCIALS WE GET, are NO GOOD to judge the movie from!!!
you know the BET commercial we got? that started with Deena running up to the stage? well, thats BORING compared to the actual beginning of the film- so from now on family- enjoy the commercials and dont think they rep the film perfectly lol
Okay, well anyways, the beginning is a split image of the OBC version, only better- AND YES I SED BETTER!
NOW, LEMME TELL YOU THIS: and Yall know I aint biased towards anybody, but before Effie could finish I'm tired, the place was laughin at her!
THERE IS SOMETHING ABOUT JENNIFER HUDSON IN THIS MOVIE, that STEALS THE SHOW!!
But it doesnt take from Lorelle or Deena or even Curtis- its just a magic she has for the camera.
Well the girls do "Move" Lorelle and Deena are perfect! - no- I mean, comparing to the OBC (which is something that should not be done) they did the steps and the moves greatly! Effie gives her rendition and tears the house down
Well the crowd in the theatre we were in LOVES it so far, and gives great applause. It was kinda scary cus you felt like u were loioking at the OBC, since the audience was almost forced to clap and give responce, because you felt like you were watching this LIVE.
Well time went on, and well... Im getting sleepy lolol
and theres so much more to say, so Ill tell u wut, Ill try to answer what ever questions you have- so PLEASE- post them
Just an FYI:
The Oscar nods are going to
Jennifer
Eddie
Anika
THEN
Bee and Jaime
Its not because of their acting, but because the story calls so much more attention to the other actors. EVERY character you felel and understand, but those first three, they pull atchu.
Also, Eddie is probably, AND I HAVE HEARD AND SEEN MANY OBC DG Shows- but I think Eddie is a better Jimmy than the OBC- YES!!!! and no its not the excitement of the movie, that wore off on the 2 hour drive back home-
EDDIE IS AWESOME IN THIS!!!
God, EVERYONE was, Jamie was a perfect Curtis!!!!!
The family montage was EXCELLENT
OHH YES!! and for us wondering if Bee kept the voice od Deena in the show-
PLEASE BELEIVE, YOULL LOVE HER RENDITION OF DREAMGIRLS- she understood the character, and performs accordingly. She dont bust out with runs! We have nothing to worry about, When it came to the part, I thought- OH LORD, she gon make this a vocal roller coaster, and she was sooo smooth and pleasant- it was nice!!
and the music!!! MY GOD THE MUSIC-
This should have come out in the summer, not only so tht it would be a hot summer flick, but because it would still be in theatres by the time Jan. 07 hit- PROMISE!!
ok- goin to bed, ask ya questions, and Ill answer them-
Love yall all
and CALI FAMILY, if you all find a pre-screening- and you need a ride- tell me!! and we'll go!! Ill come n getchu! n we'll be there-
LADIES N GENTLEMEN- ARE YOU READY?.....for the dreams?....if you are. your ready to experience- magic!!

Do you actual think Beyonce will not get an Oscar nomination...
She may...Her character isn't DEEP. Meaning, you understand that she is fighting her husband-manager, and you understand that she is looking for herself, seeing that she start in the business early- yet you never hear her say it. Now , her direction is perfect!! and her acting is perfect! She makes you feel like your a fly on the wall, watching real life, she does more than acting! So she may, its just that with character's like Effie, who you see has a problem, and then fights through the problem, it kind of out shadows Bee- BUT- her performance was awesome, She's gone above and beyond the young lady we saw in 'fighting of the temptation'- Shes an A actress now.
tell me more about Listen...
"LISTEN"- MY GOD!! When you thought Beyonce couldn't sing any better than now, You get proven wrong. I'm not a buyer of Beyonce, cause I jus dont listen to many secular songs, HOWEVER, this song should be featuired on her new album- This song makes you wanna rewind time and replace it with "I'm so in Love With You" in which she performed at the Oscars or that awards show, some time ago- The song is perfect, and she acts it out! The only thing that I kinda didnt feel was her clothes and hair. I WANT RETRO!!! I dont wanna see semi- retro. She looked like she could pass for todays style, n that I dont agree wit, but she did her part! She was awesome in this song
why do you think an ensemble cast such as in Dreamgirls should be nominated for an Oscar?
Well, I think they all work well- And work well together. I'm an actor, and a writer and director ...with lil to no experienceLOLOL- but I can tell when folks are acting, and when they are doing what they taught in acting classes, and it not going over well. But this was not it!!
These actors really played a part!! There is work to be done but the acting and direction is AWESOME!! specially Anika. Anika is the youngest character, I guess, and you see her go from a little girl, scared and ambitious, to a young lady in music, thats hurt, and a wonderful team player. To a woman who grows stronger, no matter what.

but isn't Deena supposed to be quite and unsure of her feelings, little to no expressions...isn't that Deena's character, to be the timid, meek, quite one?
Not really , Deena wasn't even this in the show. She was a young lady who THOUGHT she was in charge, and the older she got, the more she noticed she was not in charge.
But never timid n quiet. Theres one time when she scared, and thats when she branches out vocally- but once she realizes that shes loved, then this isnt an issue anymore in Deena's world.

Early Screening Reviews from Aintitcool.com
Last night I saw a test screening of the movie, Dreamgirls, starring Beyonce Knowles, Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy, Danny Glover and Jennifer Hudson. I must start by telling you that I am not completely sold on movie musicals. For the most part, I would rather see it on stage before I see it on screen. It just seems like musicals are difficult to translate to film. But of course there is always an exception to the rule and Dreamgirls is most definitely it.
As soon as the movie began, I knew Dreamgirls was in no way a traditional Broadway meets Hollywood musical. Writer/director, Bill Condon, intelligently stripped the movie of any Broadway cheesiness you might have seen in other movie musicals like The Producers and Rent. He instead kept the majority of the performances on stage and out of the street. By the time the first song was sung off stage, I was so engaged in the story I completely failed to notice or mind that it had even happened. The music itself is so infectiously singable. It has a vintage soulfulness that I think could easily make a big hit in todays music industry. It was no doubt a huge hit during the screening. Almost every number received cheering and loud applause. It was amazing to see the audience filled with energy and excitement after each number.
What really sold me on this film, however, was the acting talent of the entire cast. I expected the music to be great, but I never imagined the acting would be so outstanding. All I can say is Eddie Murphy will blow you away. He plays an unruly James Brownish character whose unpredictable antics will definitely make you laugh. Anika Noni Rose is a scene stealing fiend. Keep your eyes open, you will love her. Diana Ross, I mean, Beyonce Knowles is an amazing specimen. Her voice, her moves, her everything. She has the makings of a true Hollywood movie star. But the brightest of all the shining stars is by far, Jennifer Hudson. She plays, Effie White, a dismissed diva who sings a few show stopping songs that filled the audience with goose bumps, tears and uncontrolable cheers. She will definitely be a star after this movie. I can't believe that this is her film debut! There was such a believable realness to every word that came out of her mouth. I didn't matter whether the words were spoken or sung the audience loved every second of it. No pretense, no arrogance, just raw emotion. Definitely a sight worth seeing.
Besides a few slightly confusing bits of montage where Jamie Foxx steps into the bad side, Dreamgirls is virtually flawless. There will no doubt be tons of Oscar buzz. I highly recommend anyone who thinks they don't like musicals to go see it. It will completely change your perspective and believe me, you won't be able to get the songs out of your head. There will be a definite repeat viewing on my part and who knows maybe I'll watch it as many times as I watched Kill Bill.

Hey Harry,
Got a chance to catch this one in San Diego - loved it, thought it was a great movie and for it to be not yet finished...that's insane...First off the acting was great, Eddie Murphy was amazing and that girl from American Idol blew my mind, has she acted before in her life?
Loved all the acts in the opening talent show. The whole movie moves so fast - nothing really stands out that I didn't like, although I was a bit confused at the part towards the beginning when Jamie Fox is starting up the studio, it shows cuts of him selling a bunch of cars and then going to a boxing match, I'm guessing it was a rigged fight that he had set up to make the money, I mean it all came together at the end but it was just a little confusing when it was going on.
Nothing stood out as slow, I mean it was mixed with singing throughout enough that I didn't get disinterested ever. I really thought it was great and am excited to see it again when it's in theatres. People were applauding all the way through the movie, after a lot of the numbers and sometimes even during them. Oh, and after seeing that movie it made me wish I could bend Beyonce over, give her a good rodgering and make a map of Hawaii on her back....j/k...kind of.

About Listen :

It's an amazing power ballad that Beyoncé nails. I got chills when I was sitting in the theater watching Beyoncé perform it in the recording booth. All the while she's throwing daggers at Jamie Foxx's character. I'm pleased to hear she'll be releasing it as a single of her own

1)Do you think any of the new songs will get Oscar nominations?
Most likely "Listen" will receive a nomination. Beyonce gets really emotional and into her character in this song, and the song itself is just great.

Another review
Went to an early preview screening tonight, something I vowed never to do again after a ****ing nightmare last time when I waited for three hours for a preview of Cars and then got kicked out because I was in the wrong demographic (which is ******** because I love Pixar).
But whatever, free popcorn and Coke made me do it. Plus my girlfriend is a musical fanatic and the flyers said the movie was a Broadway musical with big stars and it's about a girl group in the 1960s, so we knew it was going to be Dreamgirls. I don't mind musicals anyway. I saw Chicago, which was just OK. I saw Sound of Music as a kid and hated it. I did like Willy Wonka as a kid. And I liked 8 Mile, if you call that a musical? My girlfriend made me see Rent, a total POS which she loved.
Anyway, the screening was at the Pacific Gaslamp multiplex here in San Diego. Packed house and everybody was buzzing and cheered when we were told we were seeing Dreamgirls, so a lot of people know more about it than I did. They said we were the first to see the movie blah blah blah and the movie wasn't finished and could have technical problems that would be fixed later. It was true, there were sound problems where the dialog would crackle and cut out at one point in the movie.
If you asked me before what I was going to think of this movie, I would have guessed it was going to be just OK, but my girlfriend was going to love it.
So much for my predictions. I tell you man, this movie is ****ING AMAZING. Definitely the best I've seen for a long, long time.
I loved this movie, and the whole audience there went completely bananas for it. I saw the trailer probably six months ago but didn't have a feeling one way or the other about it. I didn't have any idea it was going to be as good as it is.
The audience clapped after every song, we clapped for the characters, and during the big musical numbers we were cheering and yelling out. It was like being at a concert, a lot of fun. And at the end of the movie after the credits people yelled out "MORE!" You ask anybody at the screening and theyll tell you this happened. Amazing for a preview, I've never seen that happen.
The opening of the movie is great as we go suddenly into the world of live music and lights and sound. The music is unbelievable! It pumps you up every time a song comes on. The story is simple: three girls (Beyonce, Jennifer Hudson and one other) get a gig as back-up singers to Eddie Murphy's character who is kind of a James Brown (everybody around us was saying this was the story of the Supremes, but this is obviously fictional. I don't know much about the Supremes, so maybe there are some truths to the story.) One of the girls is chunkier than the others and gets kicked out of the group, even though she's the lead singer and has this amazing voice - obviously that's Jennifer Hudson.
I admit I actually used to watch American Idol. So shes fired by Jamie Foxx who is really the bad guy in this for a change, a sleazy record company guy who is playing off Jennifer Hudson against Beyonce, who he starts sleeping with (we don't see this but it's no secret he's cheating on Jennifer Hudson.) Beyonce becomes the huge star and lead singer and Jennifer Hudson is left in the dust. I won't tell you the rest of the story although this is a film of a musical so obviously some people will already know what happens (I had never heard of Dreamgirls the musical by the way). I'll just say Jennifer Hudson isn't out of the story for long.
So the movie starts at a concert and the music is pumping from the beginning and I have to say it's GREAT music. We will defnitely be getting the CD. There are uptempo songs that Eddie Murphy sings (he's come a long way with his singing by the way. Remember Party All The Time lol). Eddie's songs are very catchy. Then the most incredible part of the movie is when Jennifer Hudson and the girls have this vicious catfight (not physically but in a song, but it's intense, one of the best acting scenes I can remember seeing for a long time in a movie) and then she sings this song that I won't even describe. The whole crowd in the theater was cheering and then people were standing up after the song. I have never seen a musical with songs that get the crowd so pumped up. Then when Beyonce becomes the big star she has her own songs, which are also great songs (not at all like her usual radio stuff, by the way)
In terms of the actors, Eddie Murphy is hilarious as he and the girls go on tour at the beginning and he gets it on with the third girl, who is also hilarious, by the way. You could tell the audience loved her character. Then Eddie's character takes a nosedive into drugs and the whole record company (which is like Motown) goes to pieces in the 70s. Then disco arrives, which is also very funny.
There are so many funny scenes I can't remember them all. But Eddie is also incredible as a dramatic actor and it all gets quite dark. This is a complete return to form for Eddie. He will get an Oscar for this, and so will Jennifer Hudson. Even Beyonce is great in this - believe me.
Beyonce is not at all like Beyonce, by the way. She plays a small part at first (I didn't actually know it was her) until she becomes the lead singer, and then she's like this glamour queen but not in a Beyonce/Destiny's Child way, more of like a black Marilyn Monroe. She has dramatic scenes and it was like with Eddie Murphy: you don't see it coming and suddenly she's acting very well in these heavy scenes. I am very critical and her acting is excellent. And Jennifer Hudson is absolutely Academy-Award level.
One thing I would criticize about the movie was that there were some characters who should have had more scenes, because sometimes just when you're getting interested in a character they disappear. Like Danny Glover is the best example of that. I've never really thought of him as the best actor in the world but in this hes excellent! But his part's too small for him to get noticed (if he had more scenes I would say he would be nominated for an Oscar for supporting role). He plays Eddie's manager and he and Jamie Fox have a big falling out scene where they're fighting over who represent Eddie.
The movie is nonstop, VERY fast paced. It takes you through the 60s with racial riots and Martin Luther King, then disco as I said and so many types of music. If you're into music at all you have to see this movie.
The camerawork and lighting and editing is one of the best parts about the movie. You just want to keep looking at all these images.
So that's it, there's a LOT in this movie so I want to see it again. If anything the story probably moved almost too fast. The movie could have been a few minutes longer to spend more time on things. It all went by very quickly.
My girlfriend of course went crazy during this movie and was actually the one who wanted me to send in a review because she wants everybody to see it. I would rate this 10 out of 10 and is probably the best movie I've seen in a couple of years.
We couldn't believe how much we got into this movie and the music. Everybody was tapping their feet and laughing and cheering. They handed comment cards at the end and I would say all the scores would have to be very high. At the end of the movie the whole crowd was applauding for a long time and they had this part when the credits were on where they had clips from all the different actors, and everybody clapped like crazy for each actor and then screamed nonstop when Jennifer Hudson came on.
Sorry I'm tired I just got home and we went for drinks after and now I'm writing all of this, so it's long and probably all over the place, sorry. If you post this review call me Nightmare. Definitely see the movie when it comes out.

Entertainment Weekly's Guide To Upcoming Films
While promoting Miami Vice in July, Jamie Foxx made sure he squeezed in plenty of shout-outs for Dreamgirls, too, even though it's still months from release. The way he sees it, he's got to tub-thump early. ''It's a different animal,'' says Foxx. ''It's a musical, so you have to grow [support] right now. There's a lot of movies in December...so you gotta make sure you stay in their face.'' To that end, DreamWorks and Paramount, the studios behind this $75 million adaptation of the Tony-winning 1981 stage musical, have been giving Dreamgirls the full-court press, including a 20-minute rave-drawing sneak peek at the Cannes film festival in May.
Foxx plays Curtis, a hard-driving music manager who finds his meal ticket in a talented young trio called the Dreamettes (played by pop star Beyoncé Knowles, Tony winner Anika Noni Rose, and former American Idol standout Jennifer Hudson). The singers clash as Curtis elevates Beyoncé's Deena to the lead position of the group — sort of like what happened with Diana Ross and the Supremes. As Effie, Hudson plays the temperamental diva pushed out in the name of mainstream success. She found her movie gig pretty sweet karma after getting booted from Idol's third season. ''Simon [Cowell] said, You only get one shot,'' Hudson recalls. ''One shot at fame, and the runner-ups, you ain't never gonna see again. Y'know what, Simon? I got shot number 2.''
Speaking of comebacks, the loudest buzz on Dreamgirls is over Eddie Murphy's turn as James Thunder Early, a James Brownesque singer on a downward curve. His manic performances prompted spontaneous ovations on set from the crew — especially since they could see what a stretch the part was for him. ''Eddie seems to be a deeply shy person,'' says director Bill Condon. ''I think the kind of really extravagant performing he does here is a struggle for him. He's like a kid jumping off the diving board. Every time he gets to the edge, he doesn't want to do it. Then he does it, and he's thrilled.''

Good for her, I guess. It was the first time I had ever seen her in a film. Again, she was not bad in my opinion.

Comments of a viewer about beyonce :
Quote:
She was beautiful. There is a killer photo of her used as a wallpaper in the Rainbow Records office that is so stunning. She is wearing a huge afro and the pic is in black & white...beautiful.
Her acting is far superior to anything else you've ever seen her do. The song Listen was outstanding (her best vocal in the entire movie) and it got a very enthusiastic applause from the audience.
She played the part to a tee. She was innocent at first, then a little bit corrupted and conceited, but always unaware of what was going on. Very naive. And in the end, she humbles herself. Her character is an important one but it isn't THE most important one and Beyoncé realized that. She was excellent.
