Maxwell put out a critically-acclaimed, Grammy Award winning and platinum-selling R&B album. It's appreciated if it's done right.

And Adele is the only white "soul singer" (it depends on how you look at it) that have mainstream success at the moment. And people need to stop pretending that Adele is singing the same type of "soul" as Ledisi because she's not. Adele's songs have A LOT more crossover appeal than anything Ledisi or Jill has ever done or will ever do.

Adele's "soul" music is still Pop.

The difference between Adele and Beyonce though, is that beyonce's already been established as a mainstream r&b/ pop act. And no shade but her music is more manufactured than Adele's. Adele's music is praised more because she wrote all the songs herself and there isn't a lot of production involved in her records; I guess some would see them as better quality records. I mean, Someone Like You I heard was written in a few minutes and the instrumental is so simple but the song is powerful.

That's just my take on it.

I've been saying this since 2010. And No, for those using the "music comes in cycles" theory. Adele isn't doing anything unique. If she can have the biggest song of the year, there's no reason why artists like Ledisi can't even make Top 20. Black artists used to crossover with music with substance, but as the digital era became more of a force, all people want from Black artists is a "Super Bass" or "OMG".

Right. If this was "19" then we could be having a whole different argument, but "21" is very much a pop record.

Ledisi and Jill could sing the SAME type of soul Adele does, and I'm very certain they wouldn't even crack Top 40. White people love to buy records of other Whites doing traditionally Black genres. Why do you think Eminem is the best-selling rapper of all time?

I agree, some people really need to think before saying anything.

But they don't sing the type of records Adele does. And it would be unusual to hear Ledisi or Jill singing something like "Set Fire to the Rain," and their fans would probably say they're dumbing down their sound to appeal to pop listeners.

So why Robin Thicke, who is white as Adele and singing R&B, remains a FLOP?
