Honestly? I don't think this is fair. Should he get in trouble? Absolutely, but years in prison? I'm pretty sure his intentions didn't involve hurting his roommate minus maybe a little embarrassment, much less cause him to kill himself. Besides, if his intentions were hateful, they don't have any proof. I think they're deciding on this all too quickly.
He gets what he deserved. He should have taken the plea deal with no jail time and just community service.
The defense also contended Ravi initially set up the camera because he was afraid Clementi's older, "sketchy"-looking visitor might steal his belongings.
This is not fair in my opinion. What he did was not a hate crime, and I don't think he was homophobic or meant to hurt anyone. I feel bad for his roommate, but he ultimately made the choice to take his own life, and from what I've read, there wasn't a huge amount of pain or pressure on him. And if his friend who did almost the same thing was not convicted at all, he shouldn't be facing deportation or years in prison.
it gives a lot of context to the case, Tyler, and Ravi.
ultimately, I don't think Ravi deserves to do prison time for this. I still think what he did was terribly wrong, and I'm sure he caused a lot of damage that he did not intend.
For those why saying it's just a prank, that's fine, but you never know when is someone's breaking point. That might have been cheery on top. It's hard enough dealing with personal stuff regardless of your sexuality, regardless if your gay or straight. It's hard enough dealing with personal stuff and sometimes people can say the wrong thing or do the wrong and they can just push you over the edge. So for people to say he was stupid for killing himself or that's on him. I think that's silly because you never where you might be a year from now. Everyhting might be going so good for you and then your whole situation just changes. These people did something to effect him. Nobody wants their intimate moments captured on tape. That's some ********. He had the audacity to go on online and tell people "Go on Ustream to watch this dude have sex with another dude." Who does that? I remember he said he came back two days later to film him again? I think he is secretly gay. If you are straight, then why do you give a damn what this man does in the bedroom?
So, I don't feel bad for him. He bought this on himself.
If you break the law and you aren't a legal citizen you should be deported, plain and simple. Why should the tax payers be burdened with paying his room and board?
I'm sure he's a legal citizen
It's not like he swam here from India and has been hiding from immigration, while also managing to go to college.
First off, you all need to understand that NO ONE, not the courts, not the lawyers, is blaming Rhavi for Clementi's death. Nobody. That's not the issue. The issue is whether his spying was considered a hate crime. Was it intended to humiliate a gay student, especially to others on the internet, who could have potentially used the feed for other purposes? Was he trying to humiliate Clementi because he was gay?
I think it does constitute a hate crime. Clearly, if this guy was straight, I seriously don't think Rhavi would have attempted this - I think he did it because ZOMG gay sex. But it's just my own opinion.
Deportation is just part of the law - you commit a crime in a host country, you're sent back, regardless of how many years you lived her. Personally, I think Rhavi should just skip bail and head back to India - he's probably going to be sent back there anyway.
If he does stay, then what good will it do? His life is ruined. He has a criminal record. That eliminates much of the jobs he was probably hoping for. He shouldn't have rolled the dice and taken the plea instead - but knowing his parents are wealthy (rich brat), he figured he'd get away with it.
I'm glad the courts are cracking down on this type of bullying.
