So many close-minded people in this thread. Let's all judge these people for expressing themselves in whatever way they choose. It's not their fault you're all a bunch of sheep who dare not do anything even remotely different.
If I recall correctly, this trend started in prison as a way to stand out and assert your dominance, and I'm pretty sure the picture with the dirty fingernails is from a jail cell from the show "Lock Up".
I would totally do it if it didn't hurt, but, like, can you imagine a needle going into your eye over and over and over again?
