My theory is that the general population has an idea of what the "perfect" skin tone is. As it's somewhere in the middle, darker-skinned people may want to lighten and paler people want to tan.
People want to look different, but I think with that Beyonce photo the photagrapher is to blame. Her photos are definitely being retouched. I think it's more of marketing thing. If she looks a certain way, she appeals to other ethnicities. Same goes for Rihanna. So I can't really say that Beyonce is really bleaching her skin.
The second shot of Bey is more close to how she ACTUALLY looks. She looked darker than ever before during the Dangerously In Love era, she doesn't even look like herself on the cover. WAY too much bronzer and whatever else during that era.
People tan. Skin looks darker or lighter in different lighting. No biggie.
Britney's skin tone has remained fairly consistent throughout her entire career.
Basically, and IDK why people keep posting that damn DIL cover when there are pics of her before that and she is much lighter. If anything the 2nd picture is a better indication of her real tone.

They assume that because she's black, the darkest picture of Bey they can find is her real skin color.

Lighting is a big thing. I didn't even realize my real skin color until like 2-3 years ago. I always saw myself in my bathroom mirror, and I guess the lighting was pretty strong in there, so I always thought I was lighter.
