Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, and Lady Gaga have all made significant changes in sound/style in their career (mostly in the name of success).
Nicki Minaj was the hip-hop girl that people didn't mess with. Now, she's dressing like the inside of a Harijuku-styled plush store and singing about Starships meaning to fly with songs produced by RedOne as well as new ones by the generic hit maker Dr Luke. While they're catchy and fun to listen to, her roots of hip-hop clearly have gone to a zero, causing people to scream out "Dear Old Nicki, please call back." The sound of auto-tune and twinkle twinkle little star seem to cancel out any signs of Onika.
(Nicki used to be a bad bitch of hip hop, but is starting to sell out)
Katy Perry was Katy Hudson, the innocent Christian singer with a pastor for a parent. She sang of faith and hope. Then, her label came crumbling down (if I recall correctly) and she was pretty much done with her gospel music. The next song to be released by her? Ur So Gay, which by the title itself, is a pretty distinct shift. But when that didn't do the trick, the outlandishness reached a peak: I Kissed A Girl. Since that smash dominated America, she's been singing about peacocks, partying, and sex.
(Katy Perry was a Christian girl with a pastor for a father, then sold out to pop)
And finally, Lady Gaga was 'it' chick of pop. She was everything everybody was talking about. She showed promise and a unique sense of style nobody else grasped. Then, he Fame Monster showed a new side to Gaga and the oddness exponentially rose, which solidified her status as an icon. However, between TFM and Born This Way (which divided the public in how they liked it), Lady Gaga began to not attempt to be herself but forced herself to be different, which obviously, has been noticed by many.
(Lady Gaga was a fun pop singer, then tried to be weird and different just to be different)
