Honestly you're better off with a Macbook Pro, but iPad's are very close to computers.
It all depends on what you need it for.

I want something for school, but I like the idea of the iPad being very portable and accessible.

I bought my iPad for uni last year but honestly don't use it as much as I thought I would. I have a Mac Book Pro as well and it does way better job than an iPad. iPads are still very far away from computers IMO. If you want something more portable go with the MacBook Air.
