I wouldn't necessarily agree with that. Every year does have surprising hits but surprise hits on the level of Pumped Up Kicks are still pretty rare. I mean, you can consider We Found Love a surprise hit. People were expecting maybe a top 10 hit, not a 10-week #1 hit. PUK was perhaps THE one song that literally came out of nowhere last year. I love Foster the People but I still have no idea how that song caught on. As you said, Adele still had a following. So RITD was a surprise hit, but it wasn't necessarily a "sleeper hit" like WAY or PUK. Similarly, We Are Young came out of absolutely nowhere. They owe their success to a one 30 second commercial, though I'm very glad it's caught on.
What I'm trying to say is that we have surprise hits all the time, you're right. But sleeper-hits on the level of PUK and WAY are still rare.
