EW predicts spring's biggest song(s)
What will be this spring's biggest song?
A handful of songs are ready to break Kelly Clarkson and Adele’s stronghold on the upper tier of the pop charts.
This week, British boy band The Wanted‘s “Glad You Came” shot up from number 23 all the way to number 5 on the Hot 100 (not to brag, but we diiid say, “‘Glad You Came’ feels like a potential radio/club titan poised to become a hit” back in early February), a nd it’s likely that the boy-band jam will continue its ascent in the weeks to come.
But “Glad You Came” isnt the only new track making waves — a number of other buzzworthy songs are climbing up the chart as well.
Nicki Minaj‘s “Starships” blasted off with a No. 9 debut last week, while the ever-controversial Chris Brown rode the wave of buzz following his Rihanna collaborations to a No. 10 start for “Turn Up The Music.” This week, B.O.B.‘s latest, the Ryan Tedder-produced “So Good,” did so great with a No. 11 debut — the song already seems to be playing much bigger on pop radio than his last two singles, “Strange Clouds” and “Play the Guitar.”
Teenage Dreams: Believe it or not, The Wanted aren’t the only boy band drawing attention. British imports One Direction, who are currently out on the road with Big Time Rush, made their U.S. debut last week as “What Makes You Beautiful” entered the Hot 100 at an impressive No. 28. This week, the Bieber-promoted Carly Rae Jepsen notched a No. 38 start with her track “Call Me Maybe,” which has been No. 1 in Canada for three weeks running.
Wild Cards: Belgian sensation Gotye‘s “Somebody That I Used to Know” is already a worldwide smash, and it’s quietly been taking over America in recent weeks. Will it be the “Pumped Up Kicks” of 2011? Train is hoping to duplicate the success of “Hey Soul Sister,” and lately, the band’s new track “Drive By” does seem to be picking up some major speed. “We Are Young” rockers fun. aren’t looking to suddenly replace their current smash with a new single anytime soon, but strong first-week downloads of buzzy tune “Some Nights” place the song at No. 62 point to a potential future hit. Finally, there’s K’Naan and Nelly Furtado‘s “Is Anybody Out There,” which hasn’t hit radio yet, but sounds like a solid pop record.
For the record, we’re intentionally leaving out Katy Perry since “Part Of Me,” which debuted at No. 1, is already a certified hit. Same thing with Adele. “Rumour Has It” being a smash is a foregone conclusion:
The Wanted, "Glad You Came"
Nicki Minaj, "Starships"
Chris Brown, "Turn Up The Music"
B.O.B., "So Good"
Gotye, "Somebody That I Used to Know"
One Direction, "What Makes You Beautiful"
Train, "Drive By"
Carly Rae Jepsen, "Call Me Maybe"
fun., "Some Nights"
K'naan, "Is Anybody Out There"

I'm not even a fan of either band, and I know this is wrong.

You have to read the full sentence. They're right about One Direction.

I agree. They should've add "Hit the Lights" to the list though.

The list seems good. I am glad carly rae jepson is going to be getting a smash! That song is amazing and I am glad it's crossing over to the states.
I actually think Glad You Came is BLAND.. I don't think there is anything special for it to be doing so well.
So Good is pretty good, Somebody that I used to know is nice, What makes you beautiful is great..
Drive by is boring tbh.
I haven't heard some nights or is anybody out there yet...
Chris Brown shouldn't be on the list.
Nicki's song is already boring. It's sooooo generic it gives me a headache!
Thats my tea
