The lyrics and much of the music are, dare we say, reductive. Opening with a synth line that sounds suspiciously similar to the intro of Usher‘s ‘DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love,’ ‘Girl Gone Wild’ launches with a fiery beat and moves into a hook that borrows from both Rihanna and Cyndi Lauper: “I’m like hey-ey-ey-ey-ey-ey / I’m like a girl gone wild / A good girl gone wild / Girls they just wanna have some fun / Get fired up like a smokin’ gun / On the floor till the daylight comes / Girls they just wanna have some fun.”

Given its similarities to what’s currently being played on the radio, ‘Girl Gone Wild’ is a safe choice as a single, its title notwithstanding. There was a time when Madonna would not have been happy to merely “fit in” with everything else on the radio. This is definitely not the boundary-pushing Madonna we came to love in the ’80s and ’90s. At the same time, Madge makes it clear that she’s at a point where she just wants to have a little fun. We can spend our time lamenting the fact that Madonna is no longer a musical visionary, or we can head to the dance floor and join the party. ‘Girl Gone Wild’ makes it difficult to decide which option to choose.

At this point in her career, which Madonna do you prefer: the envelope-pushing Madonna who sets the trends or the just-wanna-have-fun Madonna who rather follows them?

Madonna has a massive legacy. She doesn't have the need to push the envelope time after time. I'm OK with that. She should upgrade the quality of her songs though. Everything post-''Confessions'' is just way under her level.

I concur. I'm only a "fan" of 80's and 90's Madonna. She has a great versatile discography and is clearly capable of making great music with substance. Her music's quality, in my opinion, has been decreasing these past couple of years.

I don't see how she can create songs like Frozen then churn out mess like GMAYL and GGW.

I stan for Madonna because she had pushed buttons, pushed pop music forward, and was generally very innovative and influential.

It opens with a shallow stab at perspective (some may fault her, but she's always been about having fun) and follows it up with a slew of insults. I don't think the song is anything special, but it doesn't define "fun Madonna" for me. Fun Madonna is '80s Madonna and Music/COADF Madonna. The "evenlope-pushing" stuff was from Like a Prayer to Ray of Light, and then she re-attempted it with American Life, but turned back on it again.

That's true, didn't think about it like that. But her music still has been decreasing in quality imo.

I prefer envelope-pushing, simply because that's so hard to find in pop music and she's proven capable of doing it with commercial success many times in the past.

But I don't have a problem with her just wanting to have fun either, as long it's with good fun music.

Oh and that reductive comment is always going to follow her every time she fails to deliver something great, isn't it?
