Even though she's right, you can still tell she's a wee bit bothered by Rihanna's success. There's an undercurrent of pressedness there. She could just as easily have made her point without mentioning her.
Oh there's definitely bitterness seeping through her comments
Quote:
while [people like me] all want to be huge pop stars.
"I tried writing with a big pop writer for this album, but I just can't do it"
And she makes it seem like Rihanna's success is so easily attainable, if that was true then you'd see more girls like her dime a dozen.
When my first record came out it was some weirdo **** on the side. Five years later, it's mainstream.
A bitter delusional mess. I just can't.

The only way they succeed is if they change their production to fit the pop market.
Shakira worked with John HIll for She Wolf(2009) and Sale El Sol (2010)
Christina worked with John HIll, Switch, and Santi on Bionic (2010)
Beyonce worked with Switch and Diplo on 4 (2011)
Nicola Roberts worked with Diplo on CInderella's Eyes (2011)
Usher worked with Diplo for his new album ( 2012)
Some of these songs/albums might not have been successful but some of the most successful pop artist of the last 10 years worked with HER and or HER producers and made great quality songs. So she is right.
these songs **** all over the katy, Rihanna, Gaga songs

They all flopped.
And the Usher song isn't signature Diplo. You can tell her changed his sound to fit Usher's style and not the other way around.
I don't think there was shade on Santi's side. She realizes she'll most likely be seen as indie til she retires/whatever - but they doesn't stop her from wanting mainstream success - just not with mainstream music.

Yeah, she definitely didn't intentionally throw Rihanna under the bus.
I love Rih but she's right, most of her smashes weren't written by her. Anyways, I'd love to see a Rih+Santigold collab, maybe she can write for her, how hot would that sound? Meanwhile, this Monday Morning song is a bop
