yes pepsi always picks big artists in their commercials, with examples including:
Madonna
Britney Spears
Mariah Carey
Michael Jackson
Kanye West
Paula Abdul
Etc.
But to think nicki isn't generation defining then your delusional. Nicki is the biggest female rap artist this generation. She's already broken rap records and shes already becoming a house hold name. Everybody knows and loves her and she's very modern, very fresh, very hip, and appeals to the teenage crowd that pepsi targets.
