Recording engineer: "Lady Gaga was fantastic to work with"

Did you ever think Lady Gaga would be here in Nebraska to record a Grammy award-winning song?
The pop superstar recorded a track for her latest album, "Born This Way," while she was here last March for a concert. I sat down with the recording engineer, Tom Ware from Warehouse Productions, who was recently nominated for a Grammy award for his work on her song, "You and I."
Ware told me about his experience working with Gaga in his studio on 44th and Dodge streets.
"Lady Gaga was fantastic to work with," Ware said. "I was a little nervous at first, but once we got started, she was really easy to work with, down to earth. She was so nice. I've worked with other celebrities and it was tense. Working with Gaga was a lot of fun."
She came into his studio, introduced herself as "Gaga" of course, and then the magic began.[/B]
"I had three microphones ready for her," Ware said. "I wanted to make the studio to her liking and a comfortable and creative atmosphere to work in. I chose this expensive tube mic, a Neuman mic, and a U87, of which we ended up using to record the track."
Gaga has been around town and has touched down everywhere. But why here in the heartland?
"The day before, March 17, she had a concert at CenturyLink," Ware said. "She wanted to record the new song. It was actually supposed to be the demo for the song, so her other recording engineer, Mutt Lange, in Switzerland would take a look at it. He liked it so much, he ended up using what I did with her at Warehouse for the CD."
Recording in the studio with Gaga was a memorable moment for Ware.
"It was undeniable, without a doubt that something special was happening," Ware said. "It was all about capturing the magic and the performance of the song."
Gaga's music has been in the Ware household for awhile. His daughter is a Lady Gaga fan, or as Gaga calls them, her "little monsters." Through this experience, Ware has gained respect for Gaga.
"She was humble,"Ware said. "She didn't put herself on a pedestal, like some celebrities. She may put on these wild outfits and put on a great show. This was a great experience. It was all about having fun, and that showed in the product. I have admiration for her. She's got ‘the goods.'"
Gaga's album, "Born This Way," sold over 1 million copies within its first week. It shot to the top of the charts, earning Gaga, Ware and everyone else involved a Grammy nomination.
Ware said the nomination shocked him.
"I didn't know what was going on," Ware said. "I got this call from Mark, from the Recording Academy, saying I won something. And me being cautious, [I] was like ‘is there a price tag with this?' Then the other line rang and it was Lisa, Gaga's assistant saying, ‘Tom, congratulations. You are up for a Grammy nomination for your work on her CD.' I was floored. It was definitely a mind-blowing moment."
By the night of the ceremony, the surprise still hadn't worn off.
"The Grammy awards ceremony was overwhelming," Ware said. "It was bigger than what you see on TV. Huge videos, incredible sound system. I see things from the technical side. There were awesome people there, including Paul McCartney. My wife, Terri, and I were there for the live telecast and pre-telecast."
Ware has done some amazing work in the recording industry working on cartoons, films and with other celebrities, such as Snoop Dog, Danny Glover, Larry the Cable Guy, Warren Buffet and Los Lobos, just to name a few. But nothing prepared him for his encounter with Gaga. It was, he said, "magic." His countless hours in the studio with Gaga have truly paid off.
"I wouldn't say I'm ‘gaga for Gaga,' but I'm definitely honored to have worked with her," Ware said. "I have respect and admiration for her. She's a good steward of the earth. She helps others succeed. She helps charities and foundations. Her message is to be strong, be individualistic. Be the best you can be. That's what I like about her."
