Justin Timberlake back to '60s for 'Inside Llewyn Davis'
DAY I

The Coen Brothers have been busy preparing the cast for their highly anticipated next project, 'Inside Llewelyn Davis, in which the lead role has gone to Justin Timberlake. The boy-bander turned solo artist turned actor has had no trouble getting movie parts in his relatively short career and his strong performances show he’s got chops.
Doubtlessly, his singing ability will be called upon in the movie, which centers on Greenwich Village’s ‘60s folk music scene. Timberlake portrays the lead role as Jim, an aspiring folk singer who is mentored by the title character, to be played by Oscar Isaac. Carey Mulligan will play Jim’s wife, Jean.
Working with the famed directors can only help Timberlake’s budding career and a movie like this could provide his greatest opportunity to date.
Filming of the movie started yesterday.

After reading the summary, I expected him to look tragic (I mean, a folk singer in the '60s?). He actually looks amazing. (Impeccably dressed as usual.) I knew the beard/long hair was for the movie and that they would straighten his hair. Critics are already discussing the Oscar worthiness of the movie, talking about how it could get Justin his first Oscar, especially since the Coen Brothers wanted Justin and no one else for the role.

This has to be a joke. The last movie I watched of him was Bad Teacher. He was terrible. I cringed.

You don't say 'no' to an opportunity like this. Even if this bombs, which it won't, it will be remembered and gain him lots of credibility.

I always feel like I'm watching "Justin Timberlake act" as opposed to a character he's trying to get across. His only strength on screen is the confidence he exudes.

In Time was also horrible. He had good scenes, but most of them were so forced

Even the critics who slammed the movie praised his performance:

Timberlake is shaping up to be a marvelous actor, and his evolution didn't begin with his slick, alluring turn as Sean Parker in The Social Network. He was terrific in Craig Brewer's 2006 Black Snake Moan, and his comic timing, in pictures like last summer's Bad Teacher, is sly and acute. He's great fun to watch here. He has a casual, playful frisson that both offsets and enhances the movie's deeper meaning.

Timberlake proves, as he did in Richard Kelly’s Southland Tales, his agility in dystopic thrillers.

On my way out of the New York preview screening of “In Time,” I overheard another moviegoer cheerfully describing what he had just seen as a “Marxist propaganda film.” So it wasn’t just me. But it says something about our times, I guess, that the phrase would even come up in reference to a motion picture that could just as well be called grade-B dystopian sci-fi, or a successful attempt to position Timberlake as an action star.

Justin Timberlake, a capable actor with potentially strong screen presences, is criminally underused. He isn't given much more to do than play a generic action hero.

Although it’s hardly an actor’s film, Timberlake is always competent, but Seyfried struggles with this gun-toting transition, and settles for hiding behind a Louise Brooks bob that accentuates her bug-eyed stare – she looks like a Kewpie doll toting G.I. Joe’s bazooka.

Timberlake fares even better as an action hero than he did as a comedic leading man in Friends with Benefits, even though he gets weak support from Seyfried (whose character earns a surprising number of laughs)

Timberlake has the steely visage and stubbled cheeks for a rogue hero, but Seyfried, has trouble connecting with Sylvia’s inner rebellious streak or, for that matter, lending urgency to her line readings. The film’s crucial failing, though, is that Niccol’s imagination is vigorously literary but not thrillingly cinematic.

Timberlake, in his best scenes, reminds you that he really is a natural actor.

"In Time" was supposed to turn Timberlake into a superhero, though given the way he manages a fairly massive pop career with an increasingly impressive acting portfolio, that may not be necessary. He brings an interesting sensibility to his characters, Will included, that suggest a complex interior that "In Time" never quite reveals. The opposite goes for Seyfried, who can do a lot more than use those big eyes and sleek lines.

Naturally, Will aims to bring Sylvia's daddy down, giving Timberlake a chance to show his action chops, which reveal he's in top shape.

And though her performance takes on a bit more life once her character becomes an empowered revolutionary, the short-coiffed Seyfried is a somewhat dull, cold love interest for these fashion model-sleek proceedings. Timberlake, however, generates enough heat on his own to keep the film enlivened, bringing to his wronged-man role a working-class grit that keeps the performance honest, and yet also a requisite degree of suave badass cockiness to help sell Niccol's well-staged on-foot and car chases.

I thought the same. His determination to breakthrough reminds me of Nicole Scherzinger.

His ambition is outstanding. Don't compare him to Nicole though. She will never happen. Justin's grown so much: after 10 movies, his career totals stands at over $2 billion, his performances are relatively critically acclaimed, he landed a lead in his last five movies, and he's currently filming movies with the Coen Brothers and Clint Eastwood.

I've found that Justin's an extremely underrated actor. I don't know whether it's just because people don't like him but he's pretty good IMO and has improved A LOT since he first started out, hence why he's getting offered such roles.
His performances in Friends with benefits and In Time were strong and well done, and the critics agree.

Anyway, can't wait to see the movie.
