Serious question. I'm black and people say I sound "white". I've received this statement from black and white people my entire life. My question is, how can a person sound black or white and can this have a derogatory/subliminal meaning? Can it be viewed as self-hatred?

Not according to physics.

I .. Don't know but in my opinion, a lot of black males have deeper voices than other men. But I don't think you can sound black and white because of the words you use and stuff like that, that's just silly.

It's all based on media-driven stereotypes

If someone types ratchet, our minds, dulled by stereotype, assume this person is black.

If someone types intelligently, our minds again dulled by stereotype, assume this person is white.

It's very interesting, and subtly racist.

If you associate mannerisms within speech with different ethnic groups. It can be positive or negative depending on the type of connotation you attach these speaking behaviors with.

I agree that a person can sound ghetto, but the statement is often "sounding black".

You don't type Eli's smiley and then say serious thread.

You can't sound a color LMAO.

What people mean to say is "Does *insert artist here* sound LIKE she could be a black female?" or "Does "Insert artist here* sound AS IF she could be a black artist?"

Instead,people are lazy and say something "sounds black"

You "learn" to speak the same way as the people around you. You picked up the way you speak from your parents,aunts, uncles, siblings and friends. It also depends on where you were raised. So it's not self- hate at all. These are just stereotypes, and some people need to realize not everyone is the same.

I'm not just talking about music artists though. I'm talking about in real life situations. Like I said, I've been told this on numerous occasions. In fact, when handling business calls some of my black friends will ask me to conduct it for them because I sound "white".

So when a black person tells another black person they sound "white" that's not self-hatred even if "sounding white" is implying that white people talk more proper and educated compared to blacks?

It all depends how you were brought up as a kid, and where you live. In other words, it's all culture. You can't be born a certain stereotype, but rather you mold into one.
