I would have loved Kanye to win AOTY. MBDTF is already one of my favorite albums of all time. But 21 is a very good album as well, and I understand why it won. It's quality (which is subjective, of course), and it effectively appeals to every demographic in a way I haven't seen since the days of Whitney and Mariah in the 90s. I don't think the importance of mass appeal should be dismissed.
