Well, I was more surprised by the fact they won AOTY but couldn't win Alternative Music Album against the Black Keys. But the Black Keys could have won in that lineup if the BRP would have picked them as an AOTY nominee.
Anyway, Eminem losing didn't surprise me for the simple fact that Hip Hop rarely wins the top categories. I was thinking if anyone pulled an upset, it would be Lady Antebellum since they won everything else. However, Arcade Fire winning made sense and was actually a deserving shocker.

I would love it if Gaga won AOTY but I'd rather not get my hopes up. She deserves it but I would be happy even if she just walked away with Pop Vocal Album or Best Pop Solo Performance. '
I would be happy if Adele walked away with the other Grammys and gave AOTY to Gaga. That would be fair.

I used this example because everyone was SURE that Justin would win the award after his successful year. But he lost ...
Just like Arcade fire won the AOTY when no one was expecting them to win.
You just can't predict the winners

It doesn't irk me that Arcade Fire won. Arcade Fire easily had the best album of the nominees, but it just makes the Grammy Awards look like such a shitshow. They're going to stun everyone, shun Justin Bieber and give AOTY to Arcade Fire, apparently to reclaim some sense of credibility, but then they nominate albums like Teenage Dream and Loud for the publicity. I know they're desperate for that link to the young audience, but it's hard to take anything they do seriously.

Most people didn't know her
I remember Twitter blowing up after she won the award. Almost everyone was asking the same Q. Who is Esperanza Spalding ??? Why did she win the award ???

I actually agree with you, though. That's why I'm not getting my hopes up with the Grammys. I know how they are.

It's even more pathetic that they are too scared to even nominate any real competition for Adele this year.

Agree with this, although Justin didn't deserve to win.

For a new artist who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist.

He and Drake are the only ones that even have a public identity established.

I wouldn't say she doesn't have competition. After that Arcade Fire win (which like some people said was a huge shocker), they probably feel that Bon Iver and Foo Fighters are competition for her. Lady GaGa is competition; it's her 3rd nomination (I'm not sure if the average voter keeps up with Grammy statistics, though). I'm hoping she wins some awards, including at least one major award, but I'm not expecting a sweep like others are. There's a terrible win every year. "My Humps" anyone?

Eh, I just mean within the AOTY category. The field is so .
Foo Fighter's album is unremarkable. It's good, but it's just there. I'd love to see Gaga do something, but I'm sure there's no chance.

I personally think they stacked the deck for Foo Fighters to win. Why four pop vocal album nominees against one rock album?

They've been doing it the past few years. I can't believe they didn't nominate a country album, though.

Bieber should never have been anyone's lock. He's still a cotton candy fotm child star in the eyes of the Grammy voters, he's going to have to work his ass off into adulthood to shake that, ala Timberlake.

They did it in ROTY last year. "Need You Now" vs. four urban records. That was one of the most predictable wins of the night.

Right. I never thought he had a chance. Esperanza Spalding benefited from vote-splitting as well. Florence + The Machine and Mumford & Sons were on equal playing fields. So were Drake (who had a hip hop bias working against him) and Justin. Still, Spalding was an enormous shocker. I didn't see that coming at all.

Oh, they're gonna win. As much as I hate to admit this because I think 21 is more deserving of the award than any other album, they're gonna win. The Grammys will make it up to Adele by letting her sweep every other category she's nominated in.
Born This Way doesn't stand a chance in hell.
