The 53-year old apparently had no idea that the Paper Planes hitmaker had 'flipped the bird' at the event, after inviting her onstage to perform their track in front of around 111.3million US viewers.

A source told the tabloid: "Madonna wasn't impressed. She prides herself on professionalism. M.I.A did nothing similar in rehearsals. Nobody knew she was going to pull this stunt.

"Madonna wanted to put on a world-beating performance. But everyone ended up talking about this girl's middle finger."

Insiders close to M.I.A. - real name Mathangi Arulpragasam - have blamed her finger gesture on "adrenaline", stating: "She wasn't thinking. She was caught in the moment and she's incredibly sorry."

It is now thought that the 36-year old could be punished with a huge fine, because artists performing at the sporting event were said to have signed a liability clause with TV network NBC.

Chief Tim Winter said: "M.I.A used a finger shamelessly to bring attention to herself, effectively telling an audience filled with children, '**** you.' "

Let the press keep talking. It's publicity for the two of them. Nicki is the one who is being overshadowed in this to be honest. No one is talking about her.
