The symbol carries meaning. Because it is understood as communicating an offensive message, you can't just say "Oh, it's just a finger." It's not.

It may have been a kind of instinctive or knee-jerk reaction from MIA. But it clearly comes with repercussions.

1) The VMAs are on MTV. The Super Bowl is on national television. Very big gap in the amount of viewers.
2) Why should the Madonna/Britney kiss be questioned? Are homosexual kisses obscene? I don't know if you're homophobic, but that certainly comes off homophobic.
3) I'm not offended by the finger, but the gesture means "**** you" or "**** off", so I can see why some would be offended.

Well this sucks. That is why NBC hasn't had a young female performer since Janet. The only other person that they had was Fergie but she isn't a loose cannon
