I find some of us are too hard on the present. Especially with artists who have been out forever. And after a few years it will be all "damn! that song"
Happened with Hard Candy for me tbh. At the time I thought it sucked, but it has some gems.
Both the song and video are rip offs of Toni Basil from the 80's. The song is horrible from someone claiming to be a vanguard and trendsetter. Actually, it's just horrible from anyone.

I'm totally surprised M.I.A. is even partaking in such a peppy song, considering her own discography is very gritty, no-holds-barred & less polished than this. This song is her antithesis.

and from reading comments on the video...Toni was 40 when she did this
Cheerleading has been a big staple in the pop context since Toni's "Hey Mickey" in '82 and I'm assuming was referenced way before that, so let's not try it with the overdone "copy-cat" remarks, seeing as the DNA of pop is referential/homage-based, which Madonna established right at her rocketing to fame around '83-'84. Countless artists have referenced it since, including Madonna (more in choreography than in full-on outfits) and (not mentioned yet) Kylie with her Heart-Beat Rock routine in 2007.
