Actually, that's not quite correct. The first year Green Day got 6 (IIRC) nominations:
Album of the Year
Record of the Year
Rock Album
Rock Performance by Duo/Group
Rock Song
Short-Form Music Video
The only won Rock Album. BUT because they won that award, they could only be nominated for ROTY and SFMV in the next cycle. (Which they were for BOBD) The Grammys feel that if your album has one a genre award, all the songs on the album have been recognized for their lyrical/vocal qualities. But - they haven't been acknowledged for their production/popularity and their music videos, making them eligible for ROTY and SFMV only. I know - it's very weird, but them's the rules.
Another Grammy rule explains why Lauryn Hill won BNA in 1998 even though she had won 2 with the Fugees two years earlier. In order to be eligible for BNA, you have to fit into these two categories:
- it has to be your breakthrough year as a new artist (which has caused some controversy due to Ciara's nomination in 2005 rather than 2004 - when she had a 7week long number one single. But she proved herself to be a legitimate artist and not an one-hit wonder in 2005, so it makes sense. It also explains why Rihanna and Natasha could still be nominated this year.)
- you have to not have any Grammy nominations as a
writer for previous material.
Lauryn (and the Fugees) didn't win any Grammys for writing anything. But people like Beyonce and Gwen did - hence, they're not being eligible.
