Madonna's Oscar pick: 'The Tree of Life'
Quote:
"The Tree of Life," which collected three Oscar nominations Tuesday, has a high-profile advocate in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences — Madonna.
In an interview from her Sunset Boulevard home, which appears in Sunday's paper, the singer spoke about her new movie as a director, "W.E.," her nervousness about her upcoming Super Bowl performance and the sounds she's mining on her new album, "MDNA." Amid her many projects, Madonna, who is a member of the academy in the actor's branch, said she does make time to watch the screeners Oscar voters receive and had selected a top choice.
" 'Tree of Life' is stunningly beautiful. That’s my favorite," Madonna said. "I think it’s a spiritual, deeply profound movie. My mouth was hanging open the entire time I was watching it."
As a filmmaker, Madonna said she is inspired by the singularity of vision reflected in "Tree of Life" director Terrence Malick's nonlinear drama starring Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain and Madonna's ex-husband, Sean Penn. The film, which chronicles the origins of the universe and a 1950s Texas family's tragic loss, was nominated for Oscars in the categories of best picture, director and cinematography.
"[Malick] really does make the movie he wants to make," Madonna said. "It’s completely and utterly authentic. And I feel like he really is channeling something without anybody else’s input. No one’s saying he should do that, he shouldn’t do that. He gets amazing performances out of his actors."

Madonna knows the true tea!

I've heard more horror stories than good things about The Tree of Life. Idk if I'm willing to give it a chance.

She also told Letterman or Leno or whoever's show she was on that she's inspired by Wong Kar-wai's imagery.
Whether she genuinely likes those movies, or whether it's the trendy thing to say, we'll never know.
So we'll give her the benefit of the doubt and say her taste in movies is not too shabby.

Meh, I was not a fan. Crap beginning, brilliant middle, ******** ending. It was just like, "What the ****...?" I'm pulling for The Artist.

The Tree Of Life > The Artist. But i'm here Jean Dujardin to win best Actor. He will be the first french actor to do so.

If you're looking for a compelling narrative (in the traditional sense), then you're probably barking up the wrong alley with Malick, but he makes the closest thing to visual poetry there is.

...what would you consider a Terrence Malick miss? The New World, maybe? The rest of his movies are all extremely critically acclaimed

Understanding the thematic content of his films isn't even a pre-requisite to appreciating his astounding skill for visual composition. There are so many shots in TTOL that just take my breath away and leave me exhilarated.

Dont bother. He's always stalking all my post trying to find something he can shade and always fail. He probably thinks he knows the story of that movie and can explain it better than Malick himself.

His work is so compelling at times, that any discrepancies (usually in the writing) throws me off. His visuals are still some of the greatest I've ever seen.
