So despite the failure of Undercovers JJ Abrams must still be considered TV's golden boy. FOX has just announced the pick-up of his most recent series Alcatraz.
The description from Futon Critic goes as such:
Quote:
A drama about a group of missing Alcatraz prisoners and guards who reappear in the present day and the efforts of a team of FBI agents to track them down and unravel the mystery behind their disappearance 30 years prior.
|
New trailer and synopsis from FOX's upfront:
Quote:
When San Francisco Police Department DET. REBECCA MADSEN (Sarah Jones, Sons of Anarchy) is assigned to a grisly homicide case, a fingerprint leads her to a shocking suspect: JACK SYLVANE (guest star Jeffrey Pierce, The Nine), a former Alcatraz inmate who died decades ago. Given her family history – both her grandfather and surrogate uncle, RAY ARCHER (Robert Forster, Jackie Brown), were guards at the prison – Madsen's interest is immediately piqued, and once the enigmatic, knows-everything-but-tells-nothing government agent EMERSON HAUSER (Sam Neill, Jurassic Park) tries to impede her investigation, she's doggedly committed.
Madsen turns to Alcatraz expert and comic book enthusiast, DR. DIEGO "DOC" SOTO (Jorge Garcia, Lost), to piece together the inexplicable sequence of events. The twosome discovers that Sylvane is not only alive, but he's loose on the streets of San Francisco, leaving bodies in his wake. And strangely, he hasn't aged a day since he was in Alcatraz, when the prison was ruled by the iron-fisted WARDEN EDWIN JAMES (Jonny Coyne, Undercovers) and the merciless ASSOCIATE WARDEN E.B. TILLER (Jason Butler Harner, The Changeling). Madsen and Soto reluctantly team with Agent Hauser and his technician, LUCY BANERJEE (Parminder Nagra, ER), to stop Sylvane's vengeful killing spree.
By delving into Alcatraz history, government cover-ups and Rebecca's own heritage, the team will ultimately discover that Sylvane is only a small part of a much larger, more sinister present-day threat. For while he may be the first, it quickly becomes clear that Sylvane won't be the last prisoner to reappear from Alcatraz. Through the course of the investigation, Madsen and Soto will learn that Agent Hauser has known about the prison's secret history and has been awaiting the prisoners' return. Soto will witness his life's work – the history of Alcatraz – come alive. Madsen will be forced to keep her supportive San Francisco cop fiance, JIMMY DICKENS (Santiago Cabrera, Heroes), at arm's length from the highly classified assignment as she sees everything she thought she knew about her family's past shattered, all while fighting to keep the country safe from history's most dangerous criminals.

Hollywood Reporter Info:
Quote:
It’s almost impossible not to like any dramatic concept conceived around Alcatraz, the famous and shuttered prison-turned-tourist-attraction that sits on its own little island, from what seems a stone’s throw from one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Except there’s not a lengthy list of quality fiction about Alcatraz. And as much as the notion for Fox’s new drama seems eagerly palpable – when Alcatraz closed, all the remaining prisoners were not shipped to other prisons, they mysteriously vanished – there’s not much payoff to the premise. Which is a real shame, because there’s a good show here somewhere. The prisoners have started coming back. And they haven’t aged. And they’re picking up where they left off in the doing-bad-things department. It just sounds so perfect. Right? All 302 prisoners and guards went poof into the night. Now, a San Francisco cop, Det. Rebecca Madsen (Sarah Jones), has stumbled on a murder committed by the first prisoner to surface. She's aided in her search by “Alcatraz expert and comic book enthusiast” Dr. Diego “Doc” Soto (Jorge Garcia). Those two get more information than they really know what to do with once they interfere with and then essentially get absorbed by government agent Emerson Hauser (Sam Neill) and his less evil-seeming partner, Lucy (Parminder Nagra). Yeah, we know the real story, Hauser says reluctantly. But the hows and whys will come slowly. Read more: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/bas...-abrams-282420

Doesn't sound like much material for an entire series but JJ must have impressed the big boys upstairs with the two episode pilot now that they are picking the show up. I have no idea what direction this show will go but I'm sure time traveling hijinks will ensue. So far 4 episodes have bee released at it's been good so far I think it'll be interesting. JJ Abrams normally does amazing concepts, so this should be exciting.

This is material for several seasons, I have no idea what you'Re talking about.
Ratings are also amazing so far.
The first two episodes were amazing, the third one kind of boring but this fourth one was everything. It was so exciting and new mysteries. I have so many speculations, omg.

AHS only has 12 episodes anyway and imo Terra Nova isn't that good, though I still have to catch up with some episode.
If you liked Lost, this is definitely something for you. If you like mystery series in general, check it out.

The show is missing something but overall it's good. We'll see how it'll evolve in the future.

Ok, you've convinced me. Lost is one my all time favorite shows. The River is also quite similar to Lost. At least from what i've read. And TerraNova also has a lot of similarities. Damn, all these shows are givin me life.

Just watched the first episode. Looks really promising.
Great cast btw. So glad Hugo is there.
And i've noticed some Lost referances. Hugo's nickname in the show is "Doc", as it was for Jack in Lost. And the #8 appeared on that key.

I still haven't had the opportunity to watch this, but I really want to. It seems pretty cool.

The 4th episode showed that the one-week-one-criminal pattern doesn't have to be monotone.
I hope the other episodes will be like this or the second one.

This is what i dont get.
If all these criminals came back, they are free from Alcatraz now. Wouldnt they want a chance to start over, since no one knows they exist and be free? Why would they continue to do what they did before they were caught, risking to be arrested again?

^I think that may be explained later on in the series. We don't yet know what happened to the prisoners or anything.
So far I'm really liking it. I loved Lost & Prison Break - and this show seems to be up that same alley.

Because it's they're nature.
None of them changed in prison, so obviously they're going to continue doing what they were arrested for in the first place.
Also, most of them have tasks to solve, like getting a key or killing someone.

Lost hooked me from the first episode. As of this show, it's more like villain of the week with every episode and writers give you little to keep you hooked for the next time.

Also the prisoners are someway "programmed" and they don't even know why they are doing these tasks.

It was somewhat okay. I'd like to know how it's going on, though we'll probably never find out. :/
