To the generic music industry, it is not.

I prefer my favs to have vocal chops (see: my sig), but the girls on the top of the charts show that this is not important to the casual music listening public.
of course it's important. But all the people who are on the top of the charts can sing. Sure maybe some don't have Whitney Mariah Celine range but they can still sing. The industry is about the total package not just vocal abilitys.
It's not important. All you need is being creative and having the ablility to keep ppl interested. Those things are crucial to any vocal talent. Real success is not about sitting on your ass and expecting ppl to worship you beacuse you have a good voice.
I think you'd have to have some vocal talent to start off and help propel you to success, but if your voice deteriorates over time (long period or short period), people are likely to look the other way and focus more on your performances and imge.
