So, to me it seems like ever since Lana Del Rey has hit the scene, she's getting more "hop on's" as fans, rather than ones that have truly been a fan of her since the beginning/start of her career. I mean dont get me wrong, lana is great and I listen to her music and album, but it seems like alot of atrl have lana del rey avatars and are now claiming that theyre her biggest fan, nobody like her, she's amazing, blablabla but only not too long ago (I'll say maybe a month/two months ago) I rarely saw avatars of her or BIG BIG fans like I do now...so my question is, can "hop on's" of lana, or any artist really, be considered "REAL" fans?

To be fair though, every popstar has bandwagoners in the beginning of their career but they usually hop off as soon as success/hype dwindles. I think this happened with Lady GaGa : she even said herself that the BTW era would test her fans to see who the TRUE fans were. How accurate she was, because she's definitely lost a lot of fans.

Not to diss GaGa, but it's true. What makes a bandwagoner's role so easy is they can hop back on anytime they want & no one will say anything about it. For example, if Lana's album flops, her fanbase might dwindle, but as soon as she found actual success, they would re-hop on.

Yes. Just because you didn't follow somebody from the beginning of their career doesn't make you any less of a fan.

No shade but I see you're a Madonna stan I'm sure you weren't even born when she started but that doesn't make you any less of a stan cause you got into her later than others.

Just because people come to an artist later doesn't mean they like the music any less

...all artists get more fans and bigger fans as they become more successful...hence why she has a record deal and her album was #1 on all sorts of itunes charts.

If she didn't get any more fans then she wouldn't be successful, of course as she becomes further spread and gains some radio play, videos played on TV etc she will garner more fans. That is literally the idea, she isn't doing all this work for a little internet following.

Well, I wasn't a fan since the beginning of her career, but I really do love her style, songs, and personality. I'm not a fan because of the hype; I'm a fan because of the music. However, if it wasn't for the hype around her, I probably wouldn't have been exposed to her.
But basically what @blackout77 said I agree with. Just because one wasn't there since the beginning, doesn't mean they can't be a true fan.

Of course. It's perfectly fine to not like an artist until you're first exposed to them - which may not be when they first start at all. I didn't like Maroon 5 until 2007, but only because I didn't really explore their music until then.

Clearly some of them are fake fans, but it is completely natural for an artist to gain followers as they become more known. More people being aware of the fact you exist -> more people like you, obviously.

"Hop on" fans will be the ones that can care less about her now but will jump on the bandwagon when they see her getting success (if she does), just like what happened with Adele
