Did the BTW era have potential?
I know the BTW era has been talked about endlessly here but I want to take it in a new direction. While the era didn't flop, everybody likes to talk down on the BTW era, especially for its single releases. Judas was handled horribly and probably wasn't the best choice to release at the time, TEoG was rushed, Y&I did fine but was a momentum stopper, leaving the public to pay MTN dust. Some even say BTW as the lead single was a bad decision too.
Now, assuming she made the "right" choices, did the BTW era have potential to be bigger than it was, or even as big as TF(M) eras? Taking things like videos into account give too many variables so just consider the material on the album only.
Tell me, ATRL.

Major potential. The single choices are what destroyed it all.
Released in this order, things would have been very different.
MTN
Judas
Sheibe
etc

This is a difficult one, i personally feel that she released the " single-potential " tracks off of the album . I cant see it being much bigger than it is with different single choices.

MTN as lead single, then Scheisse, Hair, HML, BM, Americano and Born This Way as last single. Yes the era could have been BIGGER.

The era had a TON of potential, and although she's made some mistakes along the way during this era, I still think it does have potential. I don't know what she plans on doing next, though. I never liked Judas as a single, but the video was great. If she had released another second single besides Judas, she probably would have seen more success.

Nope.
Most of that album is a mess. She did release all the "single worthy" songs, people just didn't like them.

It could have done a little better without damaging Gaga's image so much.
She and Interscope ****ed it up.

I do NOT understand the hate to the BTW era on this forum at all you guys treat it like it was her Bionic. She had a 6 week #1 lead single, a #3 hit, a #6, a #10 hit, and a flop. The album was one of the highest selling albums of the year, and she could still surprise us with another single that could smash (if it were Scheisse or Hair). The album was amazing and could win AOTY at the Grammy's.
It had potential and it smashed so.

Since the first single it was a mess but TEOG & MTN saved the era for me.

"Born This Way" (single) era wasn't handled perfectly (the song, if you exclude that amazing Grammy performance, wasn't promoted until "Judas" release at the earliest because of The Moster Ball and the video was released too late), but it was the perfect lead (I would have loved a little acoustic part at the beginning ). In the long run, it has it Platinum in the UK and it will probably hit 4xPlatinum in the US before the end of the year, while WW sales stand at approximately 7M.
"Judas" ****ed it all up, but it really sounded like a smash (it still does to me), so I don't blame them. Lyrics and controversies led to the radio boycott and to lackluster sales.
They should have gone with "The Edge Of Glory" as the second single, then "Marry The Night" with VMAs performance and "Scheisse" for the November/December period.
Gaga's image is also a problem, but I don't want her to repress herself just to be more likeable.

If "Judas" is a #10 hit, then "Russian Roulette" is a #9 smash.
