wow a little research would go a long way. I was one of the people who thought Janet was never THAT big, but after doing research she was. At one point, her career eclipsed Michael's and that's a fact. How can she be only big in "Black America" when she has 10 #1's and almost 30 top 10's (most top 5) on the main "pop" chart and has sold over 100mill records...i'm sure all of that didn't come from black people. If u watch her concert videos, most of the people in the arena were white.
I think she doesn't get mentioned as much because of the Superbowl mainly, and the fact that she has never pushed herself into the general public's attention like other artists have. Every star says they are an influence including Michael, Beyonce, Lady Gaga (there's an audio of her saying it), Britney, Chris Brown, Ciara, Christina Aguilera, JLO etc Her music even influenced Madonna's music (1 of her producers said that the instrumentation of "What Have You Done For Me lately influenced him when making 1 of madonna's songs (can't find the exact quote right now, but I can)
When someone has multiple #1's in different continents, u can't call them local. She was never outshadowed by any1 in the 90's. They all competed for Grammys, AMA's billboards (some of which that she won out of Madonna and Mariah in categories. She was the #2 billboard artist of the 90's behind Mariah. Madonna was #3. In fact, in terms of the "divas" in the early 2000's Whitney was flopping, Mariah was flopping with Glitter, Madonna finally got a #1 song, Celine was just "there" but Janet had a #1 song for 7 WEEKS. Most weeks in 2001, and the song made history for being the first song to be added to EVERY format on radio the first day of release.
Lesson is : RESEARCH GOES A LONG WAY
I'm about to do research on Prince next. It's always good to learn about artists you don't normally listen to.

I have always been a Janet fan when I was young. I always had Someone To Call My Lover on repeat when it was burning up the charts. It was till about 2 years ago when I downloaded her "Number Ones" greatest hits and fell in love even more. That's why shes my 6th most listened to artist on my Last.FM but I will tell you Brit, Madonna, Shakira, and Mariah are ahead of her on my last.fm

What's more irritating is people acting like music didn't exist before Madonna, Michael etc.
It's as if prior to the 1980s there was nothing. That's irritating to me.

She is not. I adore Janet but her success and influence does not match MJ or Madonna. Like many have said, I knew very little about her until I joined this forum, she wasn't an international megastar.

I would go IN, but I don't want to educate people to the point they have to buy their textbooks. It's getting out of hand. I'm not even a stan, but in recent months I look up different things about Janet now and then, just to educate myself. My respect for her has increased. She's epic.

I somewhat agree with this... Like if you take a look at today's big popstars who say their influences are most of them mention Madonna or MJ. Britney has always said Madonna and Janet were big influences for her.

This is it really. 100 million albums sold is a great feat but it doesn't measure up to the 200, 300, 400 the big 4 have sold. It doesn't even challenge Whitney Mariah or Celine (who I think are all heading towards 200)

Your right, but it just further proves the point he is trying to make. Janet's impact and success;
1. Didn't reach the level of Madonna, MJ, etc.
2. Didn't reach across the globe as heavily as Madonna, MJ, etc.
Janet was certainly a pop icon, but she wasn't a legend or in the elite of pop.

I dont think she had any global smash songs that everybody remembers. Yes she had hits but not really any classics. I mean, everybody still remembers Cyndi Lauper for just Girls wanna have fun and Time after time. You need those monster records.

but Rhythm Nation was JUST used in the promo for Happy Feet 2, Together Again was one of the biggest selling songs in Europe. That's The Way love Goes is an r&b classic. Control was just covered on Glee. It confuses me how people spend all day looking at itunes for positions but can't do 4 mins of research on some1 u don't know about.

She wasn't on the level of the legends, in sales or impact. I understand you stan for her, but it isn't that hard to see. She never reached Madonna, MJ, The Beatles, etc. Never. Like I said, she was on a class below that, an icon, sure, but a legend? No.

I was referring to her lack of major presence in the UK. You live under rock here if you haven't heard of MJ or Madonna.
Let it go. You love her, she's one of the top female popstars of the last 30 years, she's sold 100 million. Is that somehow not enough? Can't you just enjoy her success as it is rather than trying to fit her in with biggest stars ever where she clearly doesn't belong? I mean sheesh.
