V + the music makers (Beyoncé, Gaga, Kylie, Gwen...)

For our Spring 2002 issue of V, Mari Testino photographed former soap opera star and full-blown pop phenomenon Kylie Minogue for the magazine’s sixteenth cover. Not only was Kylie a beacon of inspiration for both the fashion world and the emerging, neon-hued electroclash music of the moment, but she also marked the first time a pop music star stared out from the cover of V, a regular tradition that has continued for nearly ten years since. On January 12, 2012, V will put forth our very first “Music Issue.” Hard to believe, right?
While we can’t let it slip who made the cover of this milestone issue—our 75th in print—we can look back at the stars who’ve graced our covers, many before their time. Who can forget Janet Jackson and Grace Jones, each photographed for us by Jean-Paul Goude? Of course, Lady Gaga’s cover with removable Marc Jacobs stick-on sunglasses was instrumental in rising her star. From Bowie to Beyonce, to Alicia Keys, to Nicki Minaj, it’s been in our blood to pump up the volume and never stop taking risks with the world’s most talented musical maestros.
